Question Ps2 or Camera?

For this christmas i want to invest in a good digital camera. Either a canon digital rebel, or Nikon coolpix 8700 . But seeing everyone freaking out like little girls over these new games, Halo 2, GTA etc.. Makes me want to get a play station. Cant choose either camera or ps2, cant afford both and by next year they will be 4-5 new games out and i will be behind, and all will be bad. but the only thing cmaera prices can do is go down by next year. any suggestions? thanks, jon

Jon:

I like your name heh...Electronics are always gowing down in prices, I remember my 2.1 MP Digi Cam I got for $300 last year and it is a piece of crap. 5 pictures and the batteries are done (good batteries were used too). Very important for you to invest on a really good Digi Cam. I think a Digi Cam will do more good. Hold your temptation on games for now. This is just my personal opinion.

If you do more gaming than anything else, by all means buy all the games you need to catch up.

I too would go with a camera. A camera will always be a useful too,l regardless of depreciation. While it may be fun, a PS2 really only amounts to hundreds of lost hours and likely even more dollars.

If you really want a system, go with XBOX (better graphics - better for your money).

I too would suggest going with a camera. It records your memories, and lets you share them with everyone. And if you keep herps, it lets us see your beaties

HTH,

I'd buy a camera to help sell snakes and with that mony, buy an AMD 64-bit rig with a front projector, 7.1 sound, and a poster of Maria Sharipova.

Heh heh..........

Coming from a PC gamer, I've lost so many friggen hours of my life playing friggen games that amount to nothing. The upside is that I play with my friends and we have a grand time being a-holes to everyone ahaha I love it. Some good bonding time on the PC, but gaming systems where you play by yourself aren't worth it. Cameras are more interesting, you can create with them, you can be an artist with them, you can just dink around with them. I'd say a camera would pay off in the end. I got a PS2 last Christmas and I hardly even play it and my brother gets all the new games. I just think it's a waste of time after a while and you can only do so much. I was drunken at a party the other week and I was playing old school Mario, now THAT'S entertainment!

Don't forget that fall of 05 is the release date for X BOX 2 and PS3!

Then all the other systems are just a hunk of plastic!

Game Boy duel screen comes out at the end of November and Playstations handheld the PSP is next spring. (looks sweet!). Just for other options. TB

If you are going with a camera...there is huge difference between the Digital Rebel and the Nikon 8700.

The Nikon has a sensor that is 2/3 " (8.80 x 6.60 mm). Even though it is an 8 MP, compared to the Digital Rebel's 6 MP..the Rebel will have much, much better image quality because...The Rebel's sensor is 22.7 x 15.1 mm

Also, the Rebel is a true SLR camera. It has interchangeable lenses so you can use any Canon auto focus lens.

Also, if you were inclined, there is a firmware hack available that will allow you to give the Digital Rebel, most of the features of the more expensive Canon 10D.

For practical purposes...Canon & Nikon are very similar. They both offer a full line of cameras and lenses for digital & 35mm photography.

Both companies offer cameras that are made of cheap plastic and both offer pro level cameras that are built like tanks and sealed against the weather. Both have a huge line up of lenses that range from cheap consumer grade stuff...up to pro lenses that cost $10,000.

If you are still comparing the Digital Rebel vs the Nikon 8700...you would be comparing apples & oranges. One is a digital SLR and the other is "point & shoot" style camera. For details on these and other digital cameras... www.dpreview.com

The Rebel is vastly superior in most ways but is probably bigger & heavier. Not to mention that buying additional lenses is very expensive. The 8700 does not let you change the lens but does zoom quite a bit...which may be all you ever need.

As far as durability goes...they are probably very similar. The big difference being that if you break the lens...you would have to repair/replace the entire camera with the 8700...while with the Rebel you just take the lens off.

One thing to think about...I believe Canon is offering a rebate on the Digital Rebel right now. $100 cash back. Also, if you buy two or three other lenses from their rebate list...you can double or triple your rebate.
