Got a question??
I have a jaguar carpet python (female) and I have a male to mate her with. But I don't know how to go about it. I know that jags can be hard to breed, but I've watched videos, and looked stuff up and I know it can definitely be done, but I just don't know how actually do it. I thought this would be the best place to come and ask since everyone knows what their talking about, and I thought someone would be willing to give me a little advice?

Re: Got a question??
We can certainly offer advice but it's definitely recommended that you look at as many sources as possible, gather what you can, and come here for clarification and further specificity. Do your part first, and we will help with the specifics.

Re: Got a question??
1st of all, are both jags, or just the female?

Re: Got a question??
Yeah their both jags. They used to be together. Like in the same tank n that, but when I bought her, I got her from a reptile shop, and I took her, and my mate took him. But the woman that owned the shop said that she hadn't tried to mate them or anything. She actually told me that it was IMPOSSIBLE to breed jags. Which I knew was carp anyway cause I wouldn't have my female if they never bred before. The only thing I'm not sure on is if she's actually a full jag or not. When I have her in with my royal, it's like he tries to do something, but she just doesn't play ball. But he's only just started trying to mate with her. And I don't know if I should stop it from happening or if they would be okay and it was to actually work? ,I'm totally baffled and I feel like I don't have anywhere to turn to cause nobody that I know really loves snakes the way I do lol. So they don't get it

Re: Got a question??
It is highly unethical to breed a jag to a jag because any offspring carrying two copies of the jag gene will either not hatch or die after birth. I'm not aware that any super jags (two copies of the gene) have ever survived, it is pretty much accepted that the combination is lethal.
That's probably what the shop owner meant... the pair can and will breed, but a large percentage of the offspring will not survive.

Re: Got a question??
^^^^^^Agreed 100%^^^^^^ Jag to Jag is a deadly combo for breeding results.

Re: Got a question??
I'll echo what was said above. Don't pair these snakes.

Re: Got a question??
Oh wow. I didn't realise that. I really really appreciate you letting me know that, because I'd never of known otherwise. I genuinely did not know that so that is great to find out. Could I pair her with any other kinds? Like a coastal? Cause I have seen videos of them being paired with them? I value everyone's opinion, I am quite new to having a jag, so I hope that I did not offend anybody by asking these questions. If I have them I am deeply sorry. I have never allowed the royal to ever do anything like that, what I meant when I said in together, at the end of the night, before I go to bed, I get both of them out and put them on my bed, just so I can fix their bark and plants n stuff before I go to bed. I don't try and actually breed them together. I just meant, when I put them on the bed together, recently he's seemed took more interest in her than he usually does. I'd never actually stick them in together to try n get them to mate. He's not tried to wrestle or hook. He just seems to be hovering about that area a bit more than usual, I just read my previous message back over and I just wanted to clear that up lol. Cause it did sound like that's what I was saying, but it's not. It's came across completely wrong and I apologise for thay. I value every person opinion so I'd appreciate people telling me what to do and what not to do.

Re: Got a question??
The jaguar gene is actually a coastal morph, so if you wanted to breed jags, that wouldn't be a bad idea at all. If you look a bit further into the jaguar gene and the information available, even using the search function on this forum, you'll find what you're looking for. In a nutshell, although jags are widely available and quite beautiful, many view it to be a flawed gene as it's linked to a neurological issue and there are people that are for, against, and everywhere in between the breeding of jags. Use your own judgement and do lots of reading, and if there are any specific questions then please keep on asking! Nobody was offended...but even if they were, don't let that stop you from asking the questions that you want to or need to know.

Re: Got a question??
Okay, thank you for the great advice. I knew that they were known as defected? My female goes upside down quite a lot, I think that its quite quirky but I do see where your coming from when you say people have different opinions. Can you tell if it's a full jag or not by how much they go upside down? Cause she can be quite nuts some times. I will go and do some more research, and if I've got any further questions ill come back if that's okay lol. I appreciate it guys. Thanks

Re: Got a question??
Presenting another view of the carpet world.... Many reputable breeders do pair jag/jag together. Yes, the super form is lethal. Typically it is a small percentage of the clutch.
If you are planning this, it should be a calculated, reasoned pairing. Personally, I have a Riddler line male DJJ and a Gamma line female DJJ that will be paired once they are old enough. But, I would not pair just any jag/jag. I am wanting to accentuate the traits of the two lines.
The neuro component is extremely variable from snake to snake. The degree of exhibited neurologic symptoms in an individual jag would influence my decision to not breed much more than the possibility of the lethal super form.
Just presenting a different side...I have great respect for the members that stated the opposing viewpoint. It's good you're seeking information on the matter. Best of luck.

Re: Got a question??
As noted by MDT, there are exceptions to the "rule." The unethical bit is generally the breeders that pair jags because they'd rather have a couple dead snakes than have to "bother" with selling "inferior" normals.
