Breeding Profile Group 1 (Hypo-Het)

Welcome to Profile 1 of 9 for Living Gems’ 2016 breeding season. Our first group pairs Ramses with Amber in search of high-quality outcrossed hypos.

Ramses, a September 2010 golden orange hypo male, comes with an impeccable pedigree: his great-grandsnakes were the founder animals of the entire hypo line, and he traces down directly by Michael Lockwood (the original hypo breeder)’s own hands. Ramses is a charismatic, friendly breeder male, but he likes to procrastinate: both of this last litters arrived in November. We’ll see if this year is any different. Here he is as of October 2015:

As of his pre-breeding weigh-in, Ramses measured 2133 grams.

Amber, a highly outcrossed October 2010 het hypo female, is noted for her vivid color, and is one of the prettiest het females I have ever seen. She can be a picky feeder, as she prefers fresh-killed to frozen and will often refuse the latter. This will be her first year breeding for us, having narrowly lost out last year in favor of the slightly larger Pearl. Here she is as of November 2015:

As of her pre-breeding weigh-in, Amber measured 2319 grams.

Ramses has thrown some high-quality hypo babies before. Our top holdback for color from 2015 is pictured below:

This litter should be different, but just as high quality.

As always, thank you for reading.

Wow, beautiful Rainbow Boas. Wishing you the best this breeding season!

Also I'm curious... what kind of personality do these snakes have? I have heard they can be bitey/difficult to handle? I love the way they look and would love to have one someday.

Gorgeous! The hypos keep getting better and better now that people are selectively breeding for high red het parents.

Mystic, rainbows are only bitey as babies...provided the breeder spends enough time with each baby to make it people-friendly. That is one of the advantages of being a small-scale breeder: we get to spend more time with each animal. The general rule, however, is that rainbows tame down with age and handling.

Well, high red, deep red, high orange, and golden orange...those are the big four color groups.
