RHP Temperature Question

Hey Everyone,

Some of you may have seen my other thread about the cage(s) I am building. http://www.ssnakess.com/forums/gener...8-x24-x18.html I have never used a RHP before and when building these, I decided to go with one since I was building a wooden cage.

Anyway, heres my dilema; I mounted the RHP and plugged it in for the first time. Now, from my understanding they SHOULDN'T get hot enough to burn my snakes. However, the panel seems like its a bit hotter than I expected it to be. It doesn't burn my hand at first touch, but if I leave my hand on it; it starts to get very uncomfortable fast. I grabbed out my temperature gun and measured the surface temperature of the heat panel and it was at 180F! That seems a little hot to me! Although as a comparison I measured one of our floodlights in the ceiling and it was about 247F. So maybe I'm just being a bit overly cautious.

Does this temperature seem normal to you? I got the panel online from Reptile Basics Inc. Reptile Basics 80 Watt Radiant Heat Panel - Reptile Basics Inc

Never used one, couldn't tell you but I'm sure someone here will give you the right answer

I have 4 40watt rbi panels and according to their faq :

The rbi panels can have a surface temp of 190f. You would have to make contact for about 10 seconds before any chance of burns. It would almost be impossible for your reptiles to get burned if installed properly. I have one panel in 12 inch high enclosure and the snake hangs out on top of warm hide directly under pane for hours. About 8 inches from panel lens. No issues at all for me.

IMO, you are good to go, looking at the pics of your new enclosure. I just measured surface Temps of 3 of my panels and we're 180+f.Normal surface Temps. I've used mine for months with zero issues and they heat very well.

I use nothing but reptilebasics RHP's. They all get 180f+ when on full power. But with a thermostat they won't be on full power all the time anyways. No need to worry.

Np! You and your reptiles will love the rbi RHP'S! Mine hang out under theirs for hours.
