Why Can't You Handle Snakes While Shedding?

I think one reason might be because they can't see as well...? Is that all? I was just wondering...

I think there's a risk of messing up the shed as well.

Some people also speculate the skin to be sensitive during the blue phase.

When they're in shed, they're vulnerable. That's why even pretty gregarious snakes will remain hidden when they are in the process of shedding. It's a stressful period and you only add to it by handling them.

You technically can handle them, but it's stressful to the snake because they cannot see very well. I've found most snakes to be more defensive during a shed cycle, and the majority will not feed during this time as well. It's best to just leave them be until they finish shedding.

Because during this time, human contact will make their scales fall right off. True story.

If its on an internet forum, it must be true! :P

Re: Why Can't You Handle Snakes While Shedding?

I usually don't handle my snakes during shed because I imagine it must feel uncomfortable being touched (I know Cloud becomes a little twitchy now when he sheds), and it must be stressful when they can't see.

But, as far as my experience goes, you're not going to ruin their shed by handling them. I've never had a bad shed from them, even if I handled them. It's like saying snakes will mistake you for food if you feed in the enclosure, it's a myth.

Just minimize handling except during maintenance for stress reasons, and you should be fine.
