Alright so I have browsed the other threads on thermo stats, and I like the idea of these Hydrofarm thermostats that alot of people mentioned. The problem is that I cant seem to get them in Canada without the price be alot more expensive. So I am wondering what my fellow Canadians use that is in a decent price range around 50$ tops. The thermostat is to control 1 enclosure so it doesnt need to be anything crazy.
a rheostat is not a thermostat, it is a manual dimmer control. IME, useless is the word for those!!
I found my hydro-farm thermostat for about $35 + tax at the greenhouse supply store, they use them to control the temps on seedling mats. for some reason they are cheaper when used for plants than in the pet trade applications
Already I have been cruisin the web for green house supply stores and collected a few phone numbers. I will call them after the long weekend and hopefully get some good results
I personally would never use a rheostat for any ofg my animals, there is zero backup if the ambient conditions change and you are not present. The thermostat should keep everything within acceptable levels with no imput from you (tho i always check my temps once a week anyway )

I have 3 of the hydrofarm units. paid about $35 each shipping included. 2 of them work good, 1 was defective right from the manufacturer. Got 1 from a place called tiny's pond world on ebay and the others from amazon. Have been using them for over a year with no problems other than the defective one (which amazon replaced free). I am now trying stc-1000 units from china that have been working amazing for about 2 months now. the only problem with the stc units is that they have to be wired up (cost me about $65 each after buying wiring and a box to house them in.) plus you need electrical knowledge to wire the unit up. The hydrofarm unit isn't a top of the line unit, but for $35-40 it gets the job done.
Hope this helps.
