Exclamation East African (Kenyan) Sand Boa Q's

Hey guys, I will be getting an East African Sand Boa soon and I have a few questions. What substrate should I use? I was thinking either shredded aspen or coconut. And should I use a heat pad? I know when they burrow they get awfully close to the bottom of the terrarium and I don't want him burned. If so, what temp? Thanks!

I will be getting one soon and I was just wondering what type of substrate is best for them, and if I should use a UTH

Use an UTH, but with a thermostat. Then they won't get burned. As to what temp to set it at--well, you have to fiddle with it. Mine tend to be set around 90 to get it to be 85 inside the enclosure, but YMMV. Having a temp gun to test spots in the enclosure is an easy way to check.

Either substrate you mentioned should be fine, I'd think.

I use shredded aspen with all my Kenyans and have my thermostats set at 94 degrees on all my racks. They prefer a hot spot temp of between 92-95, with a cool spot around 80....

I also use aspen I go between the shredded and the chips depending on what I can find. the heating I found to like the best is heat tape. my one Kenyan is a bit dumb so I stopped using hearing pads. but use a thermostat I keep mine at 90°f.

Use a layer of shelving liner. It helps prevent hot spots =)

Learned this with me geckos and swear by shelving liner now lol.

It's also antibacterial! ^_^

Make sure it's the rubber kind.
