Re: More Jasmine Pictures

PS; What do you all think of the setup? Any good? My stupid poodle knocked over my lamp and broke the heat bulb, but I found if I keep a blanket over the mesh cage top, a regular 60w bulb keeps it between 75-80 degrees in the basking spot.

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

75-80 is not warm enough for a basking spot I don't think.

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

Plenty for a garter snake.

They are a cool weather species found as far north as Alaska.

Garters are not tropical like many Milks and boids.

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

Poor girl is getting worse. She won't let me near the cage without flinching or ducking under her hide. Very jumpy and won't stay still, not in a just 'I want to explore' sort of way either. She seems to be extremely scared now. Much moreso that when I found her. Any suggestions on taming her?

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

It is very possible that she is pregnant, and as the time nears for giving birth, she is fearful for the welfare of her babies.

One risk that we run when picking up a wild snake, if it is a female, chances are she is pregnant.

As an example, I have "collected" a total of seven female snakes from my property over the last five years, every single one of them gave birth in my care.

My milk snake laid eggs within a month of capture, Garter snakes and Dekayi snakes bear live babies.....

Caring for a batch of newborns is a lot of responsibility.

Oh ok. I didn't realize that was warm enough for them- I thought they still needed higher temps. Thanks for correcting me Wayne!

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

anything up around 90 or more will cook them.

In the wild they hunt for food in the early AM hours and at dusk, they hide under things when the sun starts getting hot.

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

Hey Wayne, know anything about crap?
Jas took a crap on my carpet today. It was a mushy green color. Kinda like wasabi horseradish if you've ever seen that. Any idea what that might mean?

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

Really? I was told that it should be black and white. She's still making the popping, I guess she's just getting better though.
I'll keep handlinger her every three or four days then for about ten minutes. That's what I've been doing.

Btw, what would I see if she were pregnant?
I'm trying to look for symptoms as to why she's acting up. Perhaps its becuase she's sick? Preggers? Shed? I'd like to figure it out asap.
Also tried to give her some worms today. She wasn't interested really.

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

can you get me a clear close up of her belly section??

The reason I suspect preggers, they get really fidgety, no interest in food, pace the cage, and really the biggest reason, Every single female snake I have ever caught in the spring time was pregnant, they breed at the den site before going anywhere, the first thing they do right out of hibernation is mate.

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

Alright. I'll get some pics of her belly next time I get her out.

How long does it take for a snake to give birth from the time of getting prego?

Re: More Jasmine Pictures

two to three months, it does seem a little early for a wild garter, I usually find babies in my yard around late June early July.
