Congrats to dannybgoode for winning the last photo contest! dannybgoode has proposed this as September's theme:

"ABS - Anything but snakes." - Lizards, frogs, inverts you name it but no snakes...

Does the animal in question have to be an actual pet or can I use a native spider species photo of I chose to?

I don't see why not - pictures don't always have to be your own pet; they can be animals that belong to others or wild animals. Just as long as you're the photographer.
