My condolences, how could you have known? I would be furious with the place I bought the fish from

Re: Gutted and going out of my mind

Thanks everyone, I'm off to the seafood market for a fresh trout fillet.

It's going to be pricey, but my snakes are worth it to me.

So far the total death count is 4 snakes.

Lost all 3 Infernalis' and one Radix het.

I hate to sound like a monster, but the het really didn't phase me like my whole collection of Infernalis' there was a lot of money lost there, and my favourite species no longer exists in my house.

I wonder, 18 months ago I got some bad salmon, it wiped out a whole slew of babies, One survived but even as an adult he has nervous convulsions from time to time.

Evidently the bacteria attack the nervous system??

So sorry to hear that.

I am certainly not an expert on this topic (biomechanical engineer), but my girlfriend is a Neurobiologist. I've picked up bits and pieces of her trade, and it sounds like the little guy certainly has some type of neurological disorder; whether it was directly caused by the fish, or indirectly by bringing to surface some underlying problem that didn't present itself until after consuming the fish (due to elevated stress), I don't know.

I will consult the specialist and post any findings or hypotheses. Again, I'm so sorry for your losses and hope things get better for you.

Here's what you do go in to the Wal Mart complain and tell them how their tainted fish killed off your breeding stock. If you have to make a big stink about it. Then have a friend call one of your local news station and tell them about you making a seen and if it killed your snake maybe it's harmful to humans. If they do a store on it i'll bet you anything people will start coming forward saying they got sick from it and then you have a case.

Re: Gutted and going out of my mind

Further research on the topic revealed that some fish may have elevated levels of lead. Lead poisoning can cause neurological and behavioral implications if left untreated. Info on lead poisoning: Lead Poisoning-Topic Overview

I'm not sure if that helps, but lead poisoning could be a suspect. Good luck with everything.

Re: Gutted and going out of my mind

Pregnant women need to avoid certain fish because they contain a fair bit of mercury. That`s just how it always is though and this seems to have been a case of the fish actually being spoiled doesn`t it.... Any number of nasty bacteria could cause the sort of symptoms we`re hearing about I`d have thought. We`re thinking of you over here mate....

Re: Gutted and going out of my mind

I am so sorry to hear about this That's a lot to go wrong in just one day. I hope you don't lose any more but either way it's terrible to lose your favorite ones of the bunch and then have an enclosure break to top it off.

I'd keep proof too and try to get them to compensate you also if it were me. They shouldn't just be allowed to sell you bad fish and get away with it. Yeah it is intended for human consumption but that shouldn't matter, if it's bad fish it's bad fish, it could have hurt you and our hospital bills could have been far worse than the cost of the snakes plus you could sure for pain and work lost, they should consider themselves lucky to pay you a couple grand verses what you could sure them for if it had been you who ate it.

Re: Gutted and going out of my mind

A friend told me that salt in food will kill snakes too.

Re: Gutted and going out of my mind

That makes sense. Was it salted? Maybe preserved in salt? Naaaah that`d be obvious wouldn`t it...

Re: Gutted and going out of my mind

If the packing facility also packs salted fish, it's possible that a salted fish run had just completed (Salt Cod for instance) and the workers failed to wash down the equipment properly, then it's possible that there was some salt contamination on the fish.

I get my fresh Trout tomorrow.
