Re: A valuable lesson about frozen foods

I brought this thread back out as a reminder that ALL frozen seafood is treated with chemicals to preserve freshness, enhance appearance.

You simply MUST make sure you are buying certified chemical free organic seafoods if you are feeding it to your herps.

I was mistakenly feeding Chomper shrimp that was hosed down with preservatives I cannot even pronounce, and treated with (gasp) SALT.....

The key thing to remember, these foods are intended for humans, we can tolerate these preservatives, however sensative herps cannot.

It only takes a few grains of salt to kill a small colubrid.

Repeated ingestion of salt by larger animals like a monitor lizard slowly damages organs..

Re: A valuable lesson about frozen foods

Thank you for bringing this up. It is very good information to know and I would have slapped WalMart with a law suit if the DM didn't do something about the rotten fish.

Not even sure if it was rotten anymore, it may well have been the chemical preservatives added...

The point I am trying to make by bringing this back out is that it is of paramount importance that we buy only certified chemical free organic foods for our herps.

When I get into garters, I will only feed fish as last resort.
