Re: He's here! At long last, my Eastern Indigo.

Alright Em, tell me this..how do you get Loki to stay still for your shots? The only time I can get a still picture is when I lift their hide a day or two after feeding them.

LOL. I take about 100 shots and throw away the 99 where he didn't cooperate.

With the last photo I posted, I put his hide down and put him in it. I got ready and mostly focused, then had my daughter lift the hide off. That particular time, he sat still long enough to get several photos.

But, generally, it's the shotgun approach.

Re: He's here! At long last, my Eastern Indigo.

I started building Loki's adult enclosure. Plans are for it to be full bioactive. Inside dimensions are 6'x2'x33.5". Several inches of the depth will be substrate. I have to wait a bit now to buy the epoxy sealer for the inside and and the glass doors. I'm also waiting to install the top and some trim until I've settled on exactly how I'm going to heat and light it. So, it's a long way from finished, but I'm mostly just waiting on money.

Anyway, I just had Loki out and thought I'd see how well he fits into it. He still has plenty of room to grow.

Thanks, man. I've been focused on getting his new enclosure built so I haven't done any video or anything lately. I'm at a stoppage waiting on more funds now though, so I'll probably fool around with the camera a bit.

Re: Loki, my Eastern Indigo

Loki was excited about the Belmont Stakes today and needed to get out some pent up energy. So, I let me race around the back yard a bit.

Re: Loki, my Eastern Indigo

Loki is a beautiful snake! I just scrolled through all of these posts. How big do Eastern Indigos get?

Also neat that you are a falconer. I am a biologist who works at The Peregrine Fund, so I'm around a lot of falconers and their birds I'm not the only bird nerd here!

They can get 8.5'+. Yeah, I've noticed your kestrel avatar and have meant to ask you what kind of bird person you were. The peregrine fund is a great organization.

Awesome! That sounds like my kind of Colubrid. I'd love to see one in real life.

And yup, I research American Kestrels (investigating why they are declining), so I figured my kestrel avatar would be fitting until I get a avatar-worthy shot of my snake.

Thanks for sharing

Re: Loki, my Eastern Indigo

I have always wanted an Indigo man. When I was 13 I caught one by smoking it out of a hollow tree (I would never do this now but I was a kid desperate to capture this particular snake). My friends mother was picking us up from his grandfathers ranch, 5 hours or so from where I lived. She flat refused to allow the snake into her vehicle and I was forced to release the snake I had worked so hard to capture! I still haven't ever seen another one in the wild, so I'll break down and buy one eventually.

Yeah, I think I will have to try and own one once I make my move to California! That is a snake to die for. Gotta have a indigo soon.

Re: Loki, my Eastern Indigo

They're awesome snakes, but quite a bit different from your average snake when it comes to feeding and cleaning.

The wife snapped our photo this morning. As you can see, he's come a long way since last August.
