The key difference between an MMO and a game with Multiplayer is the style of access. An MMO will have a persistent or semi persistent online world where a large number of players can congregate and play.
A game with Multiplayer breaks down into single games played among small groups each hosted on a different server, and will typically feature a lobby etc.
There are some exceptions to this, the main one being the Diablo franchise, although it follows the rules for a Multiplayer game, its typically classified as an MMO by those who use it online frequently.
Im sorry to be a Nazi about this, but calling CoD an MMO is just silly.

Hm Im not reading tonight am I.
An MMO is everything MMO related, MMORPG, MMOFPS, MMORTS etc
and MMORPG is just an RPG in the MMO fashion.

Re: MMO fans.
I'm still gonna call CoD an MMO because it fulfills the basic requirements, massive online, multiplayer community.

Re: MMO fans.
Massively Multiplayer dosent refer to player base, it refers to the number of people you can play with at once. Not many for CoD.
You can think CoD is an MMO all you want, and I will think your wrong all I want, fair?

Re: MMO fans.
Max players in a COD game= 18 I think.
Max players in a WOW realm= like 4,000 or something.
I think that explains it.

36 is nothing. A proper MMO pushes for a few hundred on the same map at any given time.
