I also went to school, hold a full time job, have a pretty large amount of animals, have manners and oh my godness....I have over half a dozen tattoos and 11 peircings. All I started getting at 14.
Watch out for me!

PS. Way back when people thought they way Elvis danced was going to send the entire teenage population to hell. Also way back when Ozzy was thought to be Satan or at least worship him by most parents, and now you can buy his "Bobble head" at Wal Mart.

I disagree with this, you can confront all you want but they will just cus you out.. And the chance when you confont these kids you could get jumped or stabbed is very likely. How do I know this is I have seen it happen. I agree with you whan you say they think gangs are cool.. I also worked in the Jane and Finch area (landscape) we have found guns there on more then one occasion so it is a bad area. And I give you kudos for tryin to make a diffrence in that area..

I agree with Heather, I am 26 soon to be 27 mom of 3 and I have tattoos, piercing and sport unique hair occasionally. LOL, I listen to all sorts of music and do not consider myself to be a punk. I have my 1st dan black belt in Tae Kwon Do, my husband owns a successfull business. I have my tongue pierced cause I like it, hubby likes it too but I did if for me. There are other piercings I'm interested in too but I do them strictly for my personal pleasure. My tattoos are again simply for me. My previous TKD master told me once if I got another tat I could leave my black belt in his office, I responded that my tats were no different that wearing different styles of clothes, it didn't affect who I am as a person. He said the other masters thought all his students were a bunch of punks cause we had tats and some of the guys had piercings. I told him to take a look at the behaviour instead of what we are wearing, and he had no response. People do judge on what we look like, seems to be human nature but unfortunately with the gangta "look", the attitude seems to be tied in, at least I've yet to see a kid in the guise without them coping the tude to go with it.

Nita: you should have left your belt and cruised... It's only good for holding up your pants... unless it was a "special" belt

Sneaky Boa:
I find it really depressing that you are trying to be a role model to these kids. I truely hope you don't teach them your morals and ethics. I agree with Heather, Marissa and Nita (amongst others from previous pages that I can't remember who said what).
I grew up in a small town and I have been stereotyped my entire life. I am literally covered in tattoos and piercings. I am also an honour student. I recently recieved honours in my post-secondary education as well. I have been working 16 hour days at 2 different jobs since I graduated. I also have an excellent relationship with my parents who I have a great deal of respect for, and the respect is returned as well. I also show respect to anyone who shows me respect, and continue showing respect for as long as possible to those with a lack of respect. I'm gonna quit writing now as you are getting me right worked up. I sincerely feel for those kids you are trying to "help".

The ones in the streets ussually dont change their attitudes when confronted... at least from what I've seen / heard.
All in all, your look doesn't say anythin' about who you are... You can be a Jew living in the suburbs of Montreal or a computer nerd or a thug... and still be a criminal, book worm or reptile hobbyist... I'm sick of the typical "thugs are criminals" bullshit and "peirced punks'' are street bums... have an open mind from time to time and accept...

It's a good way of effortlessly finding genuine friends. The people who don't confront you and have a negative opinion towards you are obviously ingenuine people and would make absolutely horrible friends. ANYONE who judges someone by assuming their behaviour and personality by their appearance is a complete moron and is someone you wouldn't want around you. The punks and rockers I know, 100% of them, are the most genuine, awesome people I know, most of them were the smartest in school, all of them have extreme talents and are very fair and wise in their opinions, and are fun to hang out with. Gangtas are harmless as long as you don't get on their bad side, I'm talking about true gangstas. If you know where gangs have 'territory' you obviously don't want to be around there, and like with any place, don't go alone in crummy places or at night when they're out on the prowl. My buddy's dad was in a gang in Vancouver, I don't have much respect for gangs from the stories he's told me, but they ARE a family. When you've got no one to look out for you, you look to fill that void in your life and gangs are a good place to find a lot of people to back you up. Dressing like them is basically like wearing your family crest, its pride. 'Represent motha ***' as the saying goes.
Punks are awesome, no need to bring them into this conversation.
Kiddie Thugs/gangstas though are kind of materialistic and territorial and pretty much fake people because of their purchased, commercial image. Personality, however, I've met some thugs/gangstas that you can't carry a conversation with, but are pretty funny because you can't help but laugh at their fake personality ahahahahaha I'm laughing just thinking about it.
Speaking of the little kids who wear this crap, I'm not a fan of the bling bling, I think if you sport some jewelery that has some meaning to you then that's fine, but when it becomes a means of establishing a status symbol of being a 'high roller' via cubic zirconia, then come on, it's not like wearing your favourite band t-shirt, it's just creepy.
The worst is when they walk like they have a limp, and when they wear bandaids on their face......

AAAnd one thing I've noticed is that girls flock to these kinds of guys, the thugs/gangstas, and I would say it's because they know they are protected. If you're a beautiful girl and have a lot of guys on your tail, then getting with someone who will kick their *** is definately a good way of keeping yourself safe. In the end, though, you become dependant and wind up getting tossed around and treated like ****, from what I've heard. When you've got seemingly 10K worth of diamonds on you and platinum, then a girl is obviously going to assume you can take care of her, girls want security both physical and financial, someone who has enough expendible income to become so decorated seems to be the right kind of guy on an instinctual level.

Humphrey....dude...that just hurts. I was trying to say some good things about these kids. I have seen a lot about these kids' home life (keep in mind I am talking about the severe cases of lower income families), not the middle class kids. Maybe there's a misunderstanding??? What's so bad about what I said? Why am I a bad role model?
I wasn't trying to say that how you look has any bearing whatsoever on who you are.
Sorry if that's what you guys got form my post, but seriously not what I intended (after all, I of all people, am a heavily modded Neuroscience PhD student....clearly appearances mean nothing). But some of these 'thug' kids in TO genuinely find gangster life an attractive option.
That attack was hurtful and uncalled for. I was just speaking from my years of experience in the slums of TO.

" But some of these 'thug' kids in TO genuinely find gangster life an attractive option."
I get a kick out of this myself actually. I was born and raised in Southern California. My grandparents live directly in Los Angeles, my Mother had a residence in filthy Hollywood for awhile, and my Father in Sacramento.
I can only LAUGH and LAUGH when some Ontario raised "Thug" tries to tell me about the ghetto and being a thug. LOL! It's like dude, you live in ONTARIO CANADA, go try and fake people out in a real ghetto. Those people who live in real ghettos don't want IN , they want OUT!
But hey, its the same thing. I don't judge anyone for being into the hip hop culture, just like I don't want them judging me for having piercings and tats. Who cares what people look like anyways, I myself don't have time to worry about what some other person is wearing.

Sorry, that just sounded like a hypocritical stereotype to me. You don't like being stereotyped for having body modifications, yet you judge others by their appearance? I just don't get it that's all. I took it personally I guess, sorry I was right worked up. I am a pierced, tattooed "punk" who is very much into rap. I don't rock the zirconia, or the real shhh for that matter, and don't walk around thinking I'm Billy Bada$$ disrespecting everyone I see though. If there was one thing I learned way back in Public school it was not to make "hasty generalizations" about anyone based on they're appearance, as much as you thought you knew about them by looking at them. If you take the time to get to know them, 9 times outta 10 you were wrong about them, and the 1 that actually was how you thought they were, go ahead and dislike them. You now have a reason not to like them based on something other than your hasty generalizations.
Hump.

Well I have to agree with you there. Everyone gets something from someone. If someone wants to look like some one they have seen on tv or w/e thats fine. They are not copying, it may just be there style....what they like as an individual. I agree, that some things may look rediculous, though who are we to judge?

I seeeeee.......I see where the misunderstanding happened. Yep, I carelessly used the word 'pierced'....no that was an unintentional generalization. I was just using it as an adjective, not a sterotype...if that makes sense. Like saying 'those black haired goths'....nothing offensive or stereotypical, just a description. (I think that may come off wrong as well....I give up!)
I can see how that might mave been completely misconstrued. Thanks for clearing it up!

Isn't that kind of stereotypical though?
Even with the goth 'generalization' (which is what it comes off as even if unintended) I have good friends who are just scary looking, and people stare when we walk down the street.... they're still the sweetest people ever though.
The word 'pierced' applies to many, many people who do not fit into the category you're implying...
