No I didn't. Things boil over quickly whenever I frequent anyplace he goes, so I tend to avoid him.

I only observe, mainly through the reptile report.

Re: Importing Lace Monitors?

That's FR's perentie. He did have a female, but I can't recall if it's still alive.

You're right in that the photo was definitely not taken in Australia, but (being a pedant here) there are actually prickly pears (but no cholla) in Australia. Prickly pear were introduced here way back when and have been a pest species, since. They introduced a moth (Cactoblastis cactorum) which has managed to get rid of most of them, but the odd patch still remains. I saw some last week.

The other evidence that the photo was taken in the US is the guy holding the monitor, Nate. He's a friend of FR and, based on things he's said in assorted posts over the years, I think it's fair to say that he's never seen a monitor in the wild. I dare say he probably doesn't own a passport.

Gregg, Lace monitors are found on several islands off the east coast of Australia, in the states of Queensland (e.g., Whitsunday Islands, Frazier Island, South Stradbroke Island, Bribie Island...) and Victoria (e.g., Phillip Island), and maybe New South Wales as well?

I think you've taken his quote out of context. This was the original context (a suggestion that there are island colonies of lace monitors not governed by Australia's wildlife export laws):
