That's FR's perentie. He did have a female, but I can't recall if it's still alive.

You're right in that the photo was definitely not taken in Australia, but (being a pedant here) there are actually prickly pears (but no cholla) in Australia. Prickly pear were introduced here way back when and have been a pest species, since. They introduced a moth (
Cactoblastis cactorum) which has managed to get rid of most of them, but the odd patch still remains. I saw some last week.
The other evidence that the photo was taken in the US is the guy holding the monitor, Nate. He's a friend of FR and, based on things he's said in assorted posts over the years, I think it's fair to say that he's never seen a monitor in the wild. I dare say he probably doesn't own a passport.
