Re: Growing Like a Weed

Tonight I was just granted an exception to the "Dangerous Animal" code in my city.
The exception allows Tank to stay with me since he is used as an "educational" animal.
The vote was unanimous by the health dept.
I petitioned the city for the exception almost 3 months ago. After jumping through all the hoops it final.

TANK is a legal member of our family.

Congratulations Steve! I can't think of a better example for this exemption.

Re: Growing Like a Weed

Funny story about Tank.

This evening I was getting ready for bed when I looked in on Tank who was in his water. I usually put him to bed on his dog pillow but he looked comfortable so I went off to bed. 12:30am my daughter Emmyjo wakes me saying "Tank won't listen to me and go to bed, he wants you" Upstairs I went to find Tank on his pillow. Emmy said every time she covered him up he came out from under the blanket and roamed the living room. She said now that I was there he would probably go right to sleep. I got down on the floor with Tank and explained to him it was time for bed. I covered him with a blanket and he was asleep in a matter of moments. Emmy laughed and said he was playing games with her until she woke me up.
Crazy Tank just wanted Dad to tuck him in.

Re: Growing Like a Weed

Hold the phone folks.

I received word today that the City isn't going to issue the exemption for Tank. They said after it was approved a health board member brought up the issue whether Tank was a violation of some State of Iowa code. They contacted a local DNR Officer and was told I need a State issued "Educational" permit.
I then contacted the State Office of the DNR and spoke to an officer there who informed me that all I need to process the turtle was a valid Iowa fishing license.
Sounds to me one hand doesn't know what the other is doing. I will contact the city health dept. in the morning to try and clear this up.
For now, Tank is a fugitive again.

Re: Growing Like a Weed

Nothing new with regards to getting Tank legal. I'm going to be calling the State again tomorrow to try and nail down what codes/laws if any I'm in violation of.

Re: Growing Like a Weed

This morning I sent an email to the legal dept. of the Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources asking them for legal clarification on whether I could keep Tank (Chelydra seprentina- Common Snapping Turtle) I received a call back from that office a few moments ago. The gentleman informed me they were working on the issue and waiting for a response from Law Enforcement. He said that his office has been unable to find any codes/laws that say I can't keep the turtle and he feels this issue should be resolved shortly, he thinks in my favor.
Fingers and toes crossed here.
