I find kids disrespectful regardless of there stryle, but you know what? Most adults are no better!!
I am 8 months pregnant, and I take the Metro and Bus to work in the mornings, I have had an ELDERLY man and ELDERLY woman offer me their seats. in the 8 months I have been carrying, only TWICE has this happened. Heck! When I was under 5 months I would offer more pregnant ladies my seat!
And dont even get me started on the gangsta wannabees, every morning and nioght there are cops at my last Metro stop because of these kids hanging around breaking stuff, smoking up or harassing the general public before and after school.
And what about the GIRLS? some of them are WORSE than the boys! Wearing outfits that would put hookers to shame!! I tell you, It almost makes me afraid to give birth to Logan... he is much safer in my belly!!!

How about holding doors open for people? I was raised to do it and I've had older people almost fall over from shock when I hold a door open
But what's worse is when you hold a door open for someone and they just walk past without saying Thank-you. The worst part about that ,is it's usually ppl that are old enough to know to say thank you that don't. The ones that do say thanks are usually the young kids

They walk through the door like you had no choice BUT to hold it open for them.
I take my nephew to his skating lessons every Monday and Wednesday night and entering the arena I always hold the door for anyone behind me and if there's 10 people, i'll hold it for all 10. MAYBE 2 of those 10 will say thank you and it's ALWAYS kids.. Of all the kids skating, their parents likely range between ages 29-35 and NONE of them will tank you for holding the front door open, the dressing room door open or the door to the ice surface. As soon as one of the kids come through that open door, they say thank you right away..

That is true.... and when it comes to public transit in my city... it is a shame... grown men also won't give up their seat on the train to a women... it makes me wonder somtimes... I was raised very old fashioned... to be a gentleman... opening doors, weither it be a car or a building, walking on the outside of a sidewalk with a lady... etc etc... and especially giving my seat up to women ... especially a pregnant one on a train.... I actually got very mad at a man one time on the train.. well a couple men... who just sat there well a pregnant lady... with a freekin toddler was trying to balance her kid in a stroller... not to mention herself on a pact C- train one day... needless to say I aired my opinion very openly and loudly... and made them feel very stupid to boot... she had a seat very quickly!!!
Anyways this thread has adopted a couple different topics now...
Edit: Another thing that gets to me is when someone asks how you are?... and you say good, and you?........... and they don't answer you ..... makes me mental.... lol.. Don't ask me if your not going to answer me back!!!

One of my problems with the "thug" look isn't so much how funny it looks or people sporting fake "bling", but what it stands for. The message a person that dresses or acts like that is trying to send is that of a criminal. The whole genre disgusts me, people thinking it is ok to be violent, sell and do drugs, commit crimes, it's all mainstream now and "cool". I know people shouldn't be judged by their appearance, but if you are going to dress that way that what image do you expect to promote? I know one point brought up by heather was that of piercing, I can see how people are unfairly judged because of piercing and I personally see nothing wrong with them as it is just self mutilation and doesn't hurt anyone else. But the image of the "thug" and that kind of dress and what it stands for, I think, should not be tolerated. It promotes nothing good and only sends a negative message that as a person you believe it is ok to act like the gangster genre promotes.

I totally know what you mean, being a punk when I was younger people were afraid.. But when your leaving a restraunt/store and you hold the door open for the people behind they seemed quit suprised.. I also agree that most the people that do thank you are younger, but I always get a thank you from elderlys. But the middle aged people dont say anything like its a responsibility to hold the door for them.

Jeez, I'm getting old. Where did the term 'bling' come from? I get what it means and sort of assume it comes from the gangsta rap? correct?
I heard a story about a kid who tried to hold up a small store and soon had the cops running after him---poor boys pants were sooo droopy that they literally fell to his knees and he tripped!!! ...yep, he got caught. lol
I grew up in the 80's when the whole punk look was cool --I got totally into it. I liked it because everyone looked unique in their own way --thrifting was cool. Punks around here were like art students gone bad ---'art as crime, crime as art'. graffitti, poetic terrorism, illegal warehouse punk shows, tattoos, piercings, crazee hair. I loved it.
Today it seems so much like kids are all about the image of money--power is money--that's all that matters. Girls look sleazy and the boys look like they want to KILL something. I think it's sad and ugly.
They do look like dope dealers. Makes me feel like going up to them and slappin them aside the head AND giving their parents a kick in the butt!

Well, I think you guys are right... Some of you say Ganstas, others says Punk... Know what? I'm 15, i'm the type of guy who mostly listen to black/death metal, and I still hold door to people, give my seat to eldery persons and women (pregnant or not), and I walk on the side of the street while walking with women.. Always walk 2 step behind when going upstairs and 2 step in front while going downstairs, just in case ladies would fall (it arrived once and damn, was she happy I was there!). Some people (like me) are lucky enough to have been raised by good parents like mines...
Hope you guys understand even with my bad English!

Well growing up I was always a jeans and T type of girl, that was what was comfy it was what I wore. LOL, I have my tongue pierced now and 2 tattoos, and my hair is what ever color I fancy for a while and I get strange looks from time to time. I agree with the the thugs/gangta/pimp look is rediculous look at the names of the looks why would anyone want to look like a criminal???? Doesn't make sense to me. When I've got my 4yr olds at the playground and the 6-8 yr olds sound worse than sailors do, I get mad. I have on a few occasions had a few teenagers who were there start swearing and one of them right away told the others to watch their mouth there where little kids present!! Yay, score one for their parents!! I do get a kick out of parents that dress their toddlers to look like miniature 20 yr old in belly tops and hip huggers and their are the same ones whining that their 12 yr old is dressing to sexy, duh it is what you have been dressing them in since they were 2 why would they change now. I personally like my 4 yr olds to look like 4 yr olds.

I agree with shawnbc, i havent read thje whole thing through so i dont kno if this is already said or not, but ive caught a few things calling thes exco thiugs punks, theyr not. punk is a whole thing in of it self, a culture and and the true, a beliefe, these kids are a bunch of loosers doing what the media says is cool, because they have no taste of their own, also withthe parents being more afraid of their kids, kids arent that dumb, they now theyr parents cant touch them, or social services can take over, in the way of discipline, all parents can do is ground and take stuff away, woopdy do, and like shawn said, hope u understand through the grammar

I used to work a youth program both in the jane and finch area of TO and some of the seedier towns in the niagara region (Up untill I moved west not too long ago). These 'thug' kids for real think gangs are cool, and the pierced punk kids are no better. They are just copying what they see because thay have no REAL good media role models and they will continue to emmulate what they see until they find a persona that they like or discover one for themselves. IN my experience most of these kids are good kids, and the rude ones on the street will generally change their ways when confronted. Parents in recent years have been left with few effective parenting tools (what with spanking being ousted) and so discipline for these kids is a rareity. Therefore they are continually pusing the envelope until they find someone who will stop them. It's no different than when I was a kid, just that then more people were willing to stop the behaviour sooner....now the laws have made us fearful of getting sued or parents getting their kids taken away.
I have many visible mods and encounter a lot of prejudice in my daily travels...what we need to do always is be a positive role models to these 'punk' kids, instead of discounting them. They are our future leaders and once they pass through their phase of media worship and emmulation they'll turn out just as jadded and capable as the gen x-ers and the y-s. This stuff has been happening for eons (rockers, hippys etc.) They look silly and someday they'll look back at themselves (as we all have) and laugh!

I've had piercings everywhere, a couple tattoos and have been known to sport pink hair on occasion... it has nothing to do with emmulating the media, nor the music I listen to. Media worship? Get real. I do it 'cause I like it. I think some people group people who look the way I do/did into one group of disrespectful little street urchins and it's beyond ridiculous.
I have amazing parents, and I've always been extremely respectful of them and other authority figures... I have a home and go to school and have a job... but I'll stop now, as ignorance is simply ignorance and therefore there's no use arguing with closed minds.

As a parent, I believe there are many great ways to discipline children rather than spanking. Children naturally want to please their parents the problem is from small on parents give in because they don't want the child making a scene in a mall so instead of simply picking up their screaming tantrum throwing child tossing them over their shoulder and taking them home they give the kid what they want so they stop making a scene. I know all children are different, I have triplets and different things work for each one. I suppose I will have to see how things go once they are older but I am also a strong believer in keeping them busy with positive things keeps them out of trouble. My girls are in gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do and are in school 5 days a week. Keep them active enough that they won't have time to get into trouble.
Children are what we raise them to be, when I notice my children doing things I don't like I usually find it is something I do without even realizing I do it.
