Re: Post Leopard Geckos

I LOVE all those big, fat smiling heads. Leos are definitely one of my favorite lizards, if not #1 already.

Re: Post Leopard Geckos

I have a trio in a four foot enclosure and they are doing excellent, breeding like crazy, no stress, all eating well.

I think geckos in general are my favourites. I actually was never very interested in leos until my dad bought me one for my birthday (I'd asked for a gecko, but was thinking more crested gecko or day gecko or skunk gecko). But now I'm totally in love and want so many more.

Same. But we all know they live in 20 gallons in the wild.

I don't know of anyone who says they can't live in anything bigger than 20 gallons. I do, however, know some people who say that something huge might not be ideal for a particularly shy gecko, especially if it's always been kept in a much smaller enclosure.

Re: Post Leopard Geckos

Shy geckos do better in larger enclosures than smaller ones. They have the opportunity to get away from their keeper.

But would they be more willing to cross the entire viv (with hides added, of course) for proper thermoregulation?

If it's done properly, absolutely.

I disagree. Lots of people say they dont do well in large cages. I hear it all the time. People say that in large enclosures they can not find heat (really?) and that they are stressed. If you do not know what you are doing they can be VERY stressed in these but those are the animals that are in a 5 foot enclosure with nothing more than a food bowl. I do not think it is bad to keep geckos in smaller enclosures though.

I'm pretty sure no one thinks of something like a 25 gallon as a "large cage." Again, I know many people who do 40s just fine, and I've never heard anyone suggest that that wouldn't work. I think "large cage" usually applies to 55+ gallons.

Re: Post Leopard Geckos

I never said 25 gallon. I have no idea where you got that. But yes I do know people that think 25 gallons is large. People who are not into reptiles think this. Leopard geckos will do fine in a 55+ gallon tank.

I said, "I don't know of anyone who says they can't live in anything bigger than 20 gallons." You said you disagree, and you know plenty of people who say they can't live in "large cages." But if you look at the context of my comment, it was in response to when BB said sarcastically that they all live in 20 gallons in the wild, and my point was that I don't know of anyone who says 20 gallon is the absolute max, and the suggestion that they don't do well in "large cages" generally applies to 55+, not just anything bigger than 20 gallons (eg 25 gallons). I wasn't at all addressing how well they would do in it; I was addressing the fact that BB was misrepresenting the argument of (most) people who say these things.
