I'm pretty sure that it never states that they don't eat the meat. If they did eat the meat and use all the other parts of the snake would you still feel the same way??

If you eat it to survive or to provide healthy living, I would eat a snake. Why not?
This is just wasteful and moronic in my opinion.
Then again, I'm not into clothing all that much.
I'd eat any animal if I had to survive. There's food choices available and I choose to eat beef, chicken, goat, etc... more of the "normal" foods.
This reminds me of shark finning. If you don't know what that is, you should look it up.
I'm against hunting if you're not going to eat the animal or use the animal to be useful other than it's coat or fur. Realize that I'm not against hunting if you're going to actually eat the animal or at least feed your own animals, etc... The point is, don't waste the animal.

Here's the thing, we all get upset as hell when we see this sort of thing happening with snakes or lizards.
Just remember where that cheeseburger and chicken wings we all crave come from.
I won't go into details, just google or youtube Veal, Lamb, Beef, Chicken, Turkey, or just about every other living organism on this planet followed by the word "Slaughterhouse" and I all but guarantee you will see very similar sights.
We excuse ourselves for slaughtering mice and rats [how many rodents per day get put down at say just rodent pro alone] so our snakes can eat, we get pissed when someone on a mouse/rat/hamster/gerbil forum calls us monsters for feeding our herps.
It's all in your perspective of what you see before you.
We see an atrocity against animals we love, They see snakes as money / nuisance / dangerous, whatever.
If you really look into the fish industry, those critters are treated as if they have no brains at all, and/or no ability to feel pain, "Fishermen" often leave them on a chain with clips to expire slowly from the gut hook... Etc.
So think carefully before you post

Re: Reptile slaughter house. Warning Very Graphic
The point I'm trying to make is the fact that we are not looking at the whole picture here.
Maybe they eat the meat, I am willing to wager that they do, it's much like fish, it's a very lean flesh rich in protein, to a starving people, the carcasses are good as gold.

I love blood pythons... (darn again its been a while since I've been on here :P) also I am also a vegetarian and Wayne I do agree with you as long as they aren't being overly wasteful with any animal then my stand on the subject is to each their own... personally I would go back to eating meat again on the condition that I hunted everything I ate... however... really bash em with a stick? there has got to be better methods :S... I generally have a dislike for slaughter houses is all...

Re: Reptile slaughter house. Warning Very Graphic
The only thing that bugs me is that the snakes aren't killed humanely or quickly. Inflating the animal while it's still alive is pretty brutal.

Re: Reptile slaughter house. Warning Very Graphic
I agree with Infernalis- our meat that we eat comes from often very rough conditions. I've heard that they use a nail gun to put down pigs and cows in slaughterhouses. To me that's terrible. I don't want to think about it, but I still eat meat. I wish they would do it more humanely, but I can't change it. I do think that if they are going to use snakeskin, they should be farm-raising the snakes, and euthanizing humanely- I couldn't even see what they were doing to put down the snakes in that video, but it couldn't have been easy on the poor animals. I got through about 30 seconds of the video and had to turn it off. I can't stand watching anything like that.
Also, like others pointed out, if they use the meat, and they could grind up the bones for dog/cat food or fertilizer- at least it's not a waste.

cost and speed my friends, cost and speed. I'm sure the FDA has rules on what is allowed, I can't imagine using a nail gun is allowed.

Kyle, I don't know for sure, but it's a nail-gun-type thing that shoots a rod right through the center of the skull. It's supposed to be a humane, instant death...but I can't see how it would be.

Re: Reptile slaughter house. Warning Very Graphic
One unfortunate thing we have to remember, even though it may seem "nicer" to drug the animal first, it would circulate in the blood and contaminate the meat.
Brain destruction sounds brutal, but it's absolute and quick, any further twitching after that is erroneous electric signals causing reflex twitching.
I have seen animals with the head completely removed twitch about for many seconds after death.

Kim, that makes more sense. We could argue semantics here but that's just silly.

Re: Reptile slaughter house. Warning Very Graphic
I have gone to a slaughter house.. It is a nail gun in many ways. The cows feel nothing once it is fired. Places that do not do thousands of cows a week are not that bad. The one I went to was VERY clean and the Live animals where kept separate from the dead. The cows seemed calm until they where locked into a stall but then there was only 20 seconds left... This is a harsh reality for many people. Some people think that the meat they eat comes from the store and have no clue what lies behind the scene. If more people where aware some things would change however most would not.
Things like this are while I will continue to hunt for my food as much as I can.
