cats and snakes

Hi too all just wondered if any 1 has any views on my situation and i would appreciate any replies.
my girlfriend got given 2 kittens before i brought my snake and they stayed in our room most of the time . When i got my red tail i stopped the kittens coming in our room , we have now given 1 of our kittens away so we let the other 1 in our room now but i do not like the thought of the snake being scared of the cat. I would never get the snake out when the cat is in the room . now i just washed my hands like usual and went to take the snake out but she was on edge and smelt me alot more than usual and then what looked like going into strike mode , so i just closed the viv to save confusion.
The problem is every1 else in the house is fed up of the cat and being a house cat (my girlfriends decision) it has to live in our room . Is this gonna cause any problems.
does any1 else have cats go in the same room as your snake and how do they both act ?
