No I believe side necks do not retract into thier shell.. they sort of try to tuck their heads to one side or the other..

The snake-necked turtle cannot retract its nead into its shell. They do not posses the modifications of the spinal cord to do so. Snake necked turtles are of the suborder Pleurodira, and the family Chelidea. The Family Chelidea is native to S. America and Australia. They are considered to be an ancestral group to the more common and specious suborder Cryptodira, which contains the "typical" Turtles, tortoises, and sea turtles.

Just thought Id add a little info on thoose really fantastic turtles you dont see very often.
