Re: New Family Member!

I guess they're a bit like the retic of the dog world. I can admire their characteristics from a distance but wouldn't want to get too up close and personal with one. Just a bit too much dog for me!

To be fair until I met my wife I would never have considered any dog at all but she had always had them so we had a pair of Greyhounds and I totally fell in love with them - great breed.

We're looking again for something when my little boy starts school but don't know for sure what yet.

Re: New Family Member!

Love him! I know... 4 or 5 people now that have acquired dobies in the last year. My first response is always 'good luck' but it sounds like you're doing perfect so far [I seriously wonder about at least one other friend...] I would love to have a one. Rotties were my favorite as a kid but I've kind of moved away from that. Big goofy slobbery rotts are awesome but I don't think they're really for me. Not sure a dobie would be either but I absolutely love those working dogs. I have a friend who does obedience and protection training [though in another state] and I vicariously live through her since my house is too small for a large breed and I don't want a small breed dog [been there, done that, several times, my passion is giant dogs]. While I don't think I'd ever want to do bitework, I absolutely love the level of obedience and the style of obedience those dogs have. There is nothing better than seeing a well trained dog walk side by side with its own while looking up at its owner's face. I just absolutely love well trained dogs.

Also, I'm Team NaturalEars. Cropped dobies do have a certain appeal but I just love their natural ears.

I was just going through an album of really old working dog photos like police and military. The WWII wardogs [dobies] had some awesome pictures on there. Landing on the beach and a line of soldiers with their dobermans, really impressive.

My mom used to have a greyhound, she always called the breed 'a cat in a dogs body' on average they're quiet gentle couch potato dogs!
