Re: My eight legged friends, update topic.

Apparently it depends on the spider. When I was looking at Smithi an adult female is 200-300$

Those species very hard to come by nowadays though. (All brachypelma's are a rare treat now they require cites, and i know there are breeders but i am not going to order one) Haven't seen one for sale on an expo or in a store in years..
I love watching my pets grow, but I do see where you're coming from regarding the guaranteed female lol. I'm currently looking at a 4 year old G. Pulchra... I'm in love of how jet black in color she is

Wow! my most expensive spider was my nearly adult Pulchripes, paid 65,- for her. 200-300$ sounds crazy.

Re: My eight legged friends, update topic.

Yup. =(

A sling smithi is only 20-30$ though. Not bad, but they don't guarantee gender amd the slings at that price are only 1 inch big. An unsexed smithi at 4 inches is 100$. Infigure I may as well just get 5 of the cheaper babies and see who grows up as what, hope I get at least 1 female, then sell the extras....but that's not for a while anyway.

I think you could probably get a 3"+ G. pulchripes for that price over here - Definitely, a male anyway. It's the colorful and cites listed Brachypelma that seem to be the most expensive T's in the US (and things like P. metallica). The slings and juvies are reasonable, but adults are harder to come by, and expensive. Back in the 80's, you could pick up adult smithi's all day at pet stores for $20. Obviously, they were wild caught back then, and that's been stopped.

I think it's the same deal with emperor scorpions - they're now cites listed and not imported. So, the ones you find are captive bred, which is a good thing, in my opinion.

Re: My eight legged friends, update topic.

I've found that mature or nearly mature females of any species from breeders up here tend to be $200+, but they're easy enough to find for much cheaper. Adult and subadult Ts in pet shops go for around $20-$80 usually, including the occasional Brachypelma so they're not all WC(those, however, are unsexed)....However, I have gotten really great deals through enthusiast get-togethers, expos, and forum classifieds. For example, at Arachnoparty I got 2 female B smithi, one mature and one juvie at 2.5" for $65! Both in excellent health, though neither one was really "friendly" and they kicked up clouds of urticating hairs at the slightest disturbance. And I also got a subadult female X immanis from forum classifieds for $60!

There are some species that are super expensive when they first enter the hobby because of their rarity and prettiness, but the prices quickly drop as everyone starts breeding them. Look at M balfouri; slings were going for $500 a few years ago, now they're $50 or less. I'm waiting for the same thing to happen with Thrigmopoeus psychedelicus....

Re: My eight legged friends, update topic.

I bet they will have better priced Ts at repticon. I'll take a look if I go in march.

Is that 65 euros? the conversion makes a big difference.

The euro and US dollar about even right now. But, yes, it CAN make a difference.
