Re: Growing Like a Weed
I just had to share this Tank story.
After the presentation I put Tank in the back of my Subaru Outback and headed home. With a KFC only a few blocks from my house I thought I would stop by and pick up some chicken for lunch.
I ordered and pulled forward to pay. The lady opened the window and reached for my debit card. Just as she took it she let out a scream and said "Crap(not the word she used),there's a giant turtle in the back of your car" As she screamed my debit card flew under my vehicle. So now I'm out of my car looking for my card. All this time she's calling employees to the window to see Tank. Once back in my vehicle she asked me why I had a giant turtle in my car. I told her he's a member of my family and we're heading home. By now Tank is up front watching me. I took my chicken and drove off.

Re: Growing Like a Weed
man he is cool, I also have a snapper which is quite tame. I hate how they get such a bad reputation on being these monsters, when they just are not. cant wait til mine gets as big as yours . It is quite incredible how they are a lot like people, mine recognizes me and comes right over. Do you know how long they can live? I have heard they can be 150 years old

Re: Growing Like a Weed
150, not Chelydra serpentina. More like 50-70 years.
Alligator snappers live much longer then C. serpentina.

It's a unique bond Tank and I have. Not one I saw coming until it was too late but I wouldn't change a thing. The thing that makes me the happiest is how comfortable and relaxed he is with us. I don't see any signs of stress that usually accompany captivity. He is just part of the family and welcomed by all.
There are things I wish I could provide him like mating in the Spring but that just isn't feasible and can be a danger to him. I'd love to give him a much larger body of water to live in but sinking him a pond just isn't in the financial cards for me.
Putting all that aside I think he is doing very well and continues to thrive in our care.

Re: Growing Like a Weed
Today, Tank was out wandering. He came up to me so I wrapped my arms around him(bear hug style) Tank just sat there so I blew raspberries on his neck 3 times. He cocked his head and gave me a strange look, I busted out laughing. He never gave me a look of worry or defense. More of a "what the hell was that" look. I've said it before but he is one relaxed and funny turtle.

Re: Growing Like a Weed
I just found this wonderful photo of my daughter Gabby and Tank. That is Tank at 1.2 lbs. He was there first parasite treatment. Gabby is now a young lady in high school and Tank is over 35 lbs.

Re: Growing Like a Weed
He's never been shy or afraid like many turtles. This I think would have meant his death in the wild but with us it's a real plus.

Re: Growing Like a Weed
Tank had a good check up today. He's at 35.90 pounds. Clear lungs and good heart. He attracted a crowd as usual. He is such a social turtle.
Looks like Tank has done a little more growing then Gabby.
My Gabby is such a beautiful young lady.

Re: Growing Like a Weed
The more I work with Tank the more I see the bond we have. When I'm filling his water he comes to me, resting his head on my forearm. If he comes out of his water and I'm not up stairs he goes looking for me. When he finds me he runs to me and wants picked up. If someone comes into his room and he doesn't know them he comes to me as if he's waiting for my approval. I had no idea we would have this relationship but after the thousands of hours I've spent with him I guess I get what I deserve(a good thing).
I always feared that he would drift away from me as he matured but the bond has only gotten stronger. I guess he's going to keep me.
