Re: More Atheris....chlorechis this time.
Shauny, I used to get bitten constantly by the pythons and boas. I considered it a great month if I made it without a bite. It was pretty pathetic. When I decided that I wanted to keep some rear-fanged species I changed my routines a bit...no reaching into cages (always used a hook to remove snakes), I checked each cage before opening to determine exactly where the snake was in relation to the door and how far out its strike range would be, etc.
The knowledge of the hots' power and capabilities keeps me on my toes...I know that a slip up will not be tolerated, so I don't let myself slide on my alertness and protocols at all. I open cages with a hook, wear gloves as well as stay out of range, and always have a secure holding container on hand whenever I enter the viper room. They are honestly not that bad once you get used to them and their behavior, although the cobra and copperheads are a handful ( they do not hook well).
