Re: Off food

Who said all pythons stop eating at this time of year? I said the ones that do stop tend to do it at this time of year. I went strictly by the initial post. No time to sort through all the ops other posts. If its stress I stand corrected but there are many posts right now about snakes going off feed. It is the season and from the posts in this thread there is no indication of stress. I would agree this snake does seem a bit young to be having a breed not feed mentality. I am a believer in this. Handling alone is not stressfull on a snake, stressfull handling is. Having your snake sit on your lap should not be stressfull but a kid running around the house carrying a snake would be. Like I said before if all your husbandry is correct simple handling should not be an issue. Especially for a royal who are the most handling tolerant snakes I can think of.

so imo the op has NOT had time,to get to KNOW the snake and its feeding habits

imo handling a snake that has went off it's food is never a good idea

imo the snake needs left in peace and quiet, only going near it to offer food every 7 to 10 days, until its eating regular

to the op
you said you researched the feeding out its tank...

feeding IN the tank helps make the snake more secure,IMO taking it out WON'T help if the snake is already stressed

re handling
TERRANAUT,why keep handling a snake thats off its food ?

i see NO benifit in doing this, but it can cause problems should the snake already be stressed out

it may well be breeding season that has put it of eating, but WE have no way of telling that,by reading a post ?

cheers shaun

I had no idea the op had this snake only 2 months or I may have posted differently but as far as handling a snake that is off food. If its a seasonal thing like lets say my male JCP right now I see no reason to change your normal routine. If my two are at seperate ends of the viv and not doing the wild thing I would not hesitate to handle one. But like I said I do not do anything crazy but letting your snake lurk about on you or just holding it should not be an issue if thats normal for it to be held.

i hear what your saying.....

if you've had a snake for a couple of years and you know its feeding habits, and it always goes off its food in breeding season, then i agree handling will not do it any harm

but with a snake you have NOT owned for a couple of breeding seasons, then we have NO way of telling if its an anual event or not

cheers shaun
