And just to throw it out there, you should never pick up a snake you can't ID. I suffered from more guts than knowledge back around my late teens early 20's and I managed to get tagged by 3 different mildly venomous snakes in 2 different pet stores in Ma and NH. Got hit in Fitchburg and Nashua by snakes I couldn't ID and got lucky to have no real problems beyond some minor swelling. Since then I have seen some fairly significantly venomous colubrids in stores for sale and more often than not the staff has no clue. In this age of smart phones look it up!!
