Re: FIRST snake, possibly a carpet?
A carpet is a great beginer snake. No humidity issues, very hardy, good eaters and not heavy bodied. Other than nippy as a baby I see no reason a corn would be better?

Re: FIRST snake, possibly a carpet?
Maybe starting out with a yearling for some 1st time snake owners the nippy phase can scare them leaving them unsure what to do with it.

I used to keep Corns a few years ago... before I knew what Carpets were.
Corns have less strict heat requirements, and even less strict humidity requirements. Corns are also smaller and (in my personal experience) eat even better than Carpets.
I absolutely prefer Carpets over Corns, and they're both easy to keep. But I'd say Corns are easier to keep than carpets...

I keep both now and I agree with you on every point. Carpets do make for more interesting snakes and as easy as they are to take care of, Corns are even easier.

Re: FIRST snake, possibly a carpet?
I know they are easy to keep but in my opinion a carpet is so much more rewarding and only require slightly more effort. Sometimes people need a slight challenge to keep it all interesting and interactive. Monitoring husbandy and keeping it optimal is much more exciting if you actually have to do it

Re: FIRST snake, possibly a carpet?
I would totally go for the carpet. Especially if you have a growing passion for them. They are gorgeous, interesting animals. And even more if you know you can only keep one snake, why limit yourself to something that isn't what you wanted most. My first snake was my rainbow boa, and of course I was being pushed towards buying a ball , due to high humidity requirements. I'm glad I stuck with my decision , as long as you are commited, go for it. And I must add the jags are my favorite. Good luck!

Re: FIRST snake, possibly a carpet?
ball pythons are wonderful snakes, very beautiful when bred to a carpet. but a pures are easier to find, you should go for a high yellow jag.

Re: FIRST snake, possibly a carpet?
I do not have a carpet as of yet but I have several friends who have them and agreed they may not be a good starter snake thats why I have waited until now before contemplating one. But to each his own what may be difficult for one may not be for another good luck

Carpets are bigger, more active, and like to climb and display themselves if you give them a nice setup.
Ball Pythons spend the vast majority of their time hidden away, they're very sweet and tolerant snakes though.

This is a big reason I'm considering a carpet as my second (and end of me buying snakes for at least a few years). Balls don't do much for me, and I finally saw some really gorgeous carpets at an expo this past weekend and love them. Add that to that they like to hang around displayed well and their heartiness (I didnt know that, so that's a good thing!). I think it would make a great first snake!

Ball Pythons don't need to be bred to Carpets to be beautiful.
Morph List - World of Ball Pythons
And a pure Ball Python being easier to find than a Carpball hybrid is a massive understatement...
