Re: Young Dum Boa hasn't eaten since Nov '11

My 6 month old Dumeril eats really well as long as the prey is live. I tried stunning a rat, and accidentally killed it. I put it in twitching, and she had no interest. I got tongs and waved in in front of her, and she made some defensive strikes, but wouldn't wrap it up. I threw a live one in, and she took it. I think a your best bet with that snake at that size is something about 20-30 grams if you can get a rat that size go for it otherwise try a mouse. Dumerils are surprise hunters they lie in wait.

Thanks. What is 20-30 grams comparable to? Local pet stores don't have live rat pups. I'm going to try a place near my job in Brooklyn. I checked CL, no luck there either. Rat pups are the pinkies of rats right? Google shows them as both pinkie rats and tiny rats that basically look like adult mice, but with there eyes closed and longer tails (and meatier). I just want to make sure I get the right stuff.

Rat pups are 2 weeks old 20-29g and fully furred same size as an adult mouse. The little newborns are called rat pinkies. Re: rodentpro size chart.

Third from left is a smaller pup. The fourth one looks like a bigger pup.

This is the only type of "rat pups" that PetLand had...I'm going to try to take a photo of the rat next to the snake for comparison. It looks like the right size for him, but it's not what you showed me in the picture...

Very good. Thats awesome.

Btw, those look like rat pinkies to me. If he's eating the pinkies, thats fine but Id try to see if I could up the prey size soon because that Dum of yours will want more. Just ease into it.
