Re: Main difference between a Hog Island and a Dumeril?

It IS a personal choice. I dont have any experience with Hoggs but I currently have 7 Dums. Husbandry is fairly simple. They aren't susceptible to dehydration like Brazilians. As long as you keep enough water in the tub/cage and their heat at least in the low 80s on the cool side and the upper 80s on the warm side, you will have a happy healthy snake. The males normally top out at 6' and the females normally top out at 7' (unless its Black Betty youre talking about. Shes the exception). Their temperment is very calm and tame. In fact, Ive never met a feisty Dum yet. Breeding them is a bit more of a challenge though. After lockup, the female can hold the sperm for a very long time, which explains why no one has ever come up with an exact gestation period for Dums. Depending on who you talk to you'll get 6 months up to 9 months. Bottom line on breeding is that the female is in TOTAL control over when it all happens. I hope that help explain Dums a bit more.

Re: Main difference between a Hog Island and a Dumeril?

I'd love it if one of my dumerils became an exception.

I've never had a hog but I've had (and currently have one) other BCI's and I have dumerils. Quite honestly, I couldn't chose between the two. Both are great animals. For the most part both are docile, but I think the BCI's are more curious. When I have my BCI out, she's always on the move and active, quite nosey and curious about her surroundings. While my dumerils will move around a bit at first, like they're seeing what's up, then become, for the most part, a lap snake. Wherever I put them is pretty much where they stay. I can sit and watch movies with my dumerils, but really can't with my BCI.

Husbandry requirements are a bit similar but both are still really easy to keep. My dumerils have a better feeding response than my BCI as well. Both are great eaters.

It's going to come down to which one you like best and which one you think better fits you (like active or non active). It's definitely a personal preference and not one I'd want to make lol

Good luck with whichever you decide to get and keep us updated!

Re: Main difference between a Hog Island and a Dumeril?

My male 5 year old hog is 7 feet! be prepared for any size, because 7 feet for a male is very rare.

I still think 15" high maybe a little too low.

Re: Main difference between a Hog Island and a Dumeril?

For a heavy bodied snake I'd say 18 inch to 2 foot in height... My dwarf bci looked cramped in an 18" high viv so I upgraded.

Re: Main difference between a Hog Island and a Dumeril?

When I was shopping for enclosures I asked on Red Tail boas forum, and most members agree that the Boaphile 421d is sufficient for most boas. With a dumeril you have the added bonus that they stay on the ground, so height of the enclosure really isn't an issue. That said I ordered a proline for my female dumeril, because it is BPA free, and 14" tall.

Re: Main difference between a Hog Island and a Dumeril?

So why would 12" tall be to low for a boa? They do not require a taller cage. Many people keep adult boas in 12" tall cages. Other than taking them out i they are at all cage defensive I see no issues? Please correct me if I am wrong.

Re: Main difference between a Hog Island and a Dumeril?

Well boas are considered semi arboreal. Would you leave a bull frog in an aquarium and not provide a dry land area for him?

I've seen my dumeril get on the branches in his tub and stay there a little bit of more height wouldn't hurt

If you handle the snake regularly it can climb and get exercise outside the tank. Especially for dumeril 12 inches is enough. I only needed 14, because I need a large heat panel.
