Re: My savannah monitor!
nice looking sav, imho i dont think you should feed him as much as he wants. I did feed mine alot, but i kept him at a heathy weight, i dont believe in mass feeding baby savs like i read some people swear on. keep the pics coming. oh and im glad you found a colony.i also feed mine snails meat, when spring gets here im going to start snail hunting and stock up for the winter months, have not been able to find any to buy in months and my sav is murdering my colony lol last year i turned my nose up at the idea, but then the stores around that had, no longer seem to, now im paying for my lazy ways like always lol

Re: My savannah monitor!
Are you worried about parasites from wild caught snails Freebody? Snails are pretty notorious for being rampant with them. I have been told that freezing them kills most of the parasites, but Im not sure of the accuracy of that statement

Re: My savannah monitor!
Here is the thing, snails carry single cell organisms, as do all living creatures.
A healthy animal has white blood cells, an immunity system in place to combat them.
The stage of flatworms when carried by a snail is the harmless stage. It's after, when it passes to the next host (tadpoles) that the problem starts.

Re: My savannah monitor!
I actually researched flatworms quite some time ago, because Garter Snakes eat tadpoles and frogs.
I can tell on sight if a tadpole has a flatworm cercariae in it, the cyst looks like a tiny red pimple.

Re: My savannah monitor!
Oh okay.......I was thinking the little one in this thread was yours Wayne. I can't wait to see your new baby when you get him/her. Anyone seen the yellow tree monitors? Saw one the other day......gorgeous! I'd love to have a monitor but don't have the room and I would never get one unless I had the room and time to care for him/her properly. After I retire many years from now, I will consider it.
