Re: Elaphe Carinata: King Rat Snakes
Trans pecos have great temperaments! I have heard people say they are so docile you can actually pick a wild one up and not get bit! I have 2 blondes and they are really nice snakes.

Re: Elaphe Carinata: King Rat Snakes
I've heard lots of talk that king rats are in need of further examination and possibly being removed from the elaphe genus as it's very possible they are not rat snakes at all... and I'd say I have to agree with that.... they even have differently shaped pupils and they feel and act NOTHING like any other rat snakes. IMO... too smart to be a rat snake.

Re: Elaphe Carinata: King Rat Snakes
To me there eyes look like a pine snake or garter but they have an intense gaze like my gophers do.

If you want a tame cuddly snake king rats are NOT the droids you are looking for. If you want a BIG colubrid that is seriously heavy, stubborn, feels rougher than sandpaper and has mood swings that make a pregnant woman seem rational, then they are the snake for you.

LMAO!!! I love this description. I saw a king rat snake at a show a few years back, and I'm sorry I didn't buy it. It was a gorgeous snake...and HUGE. Currently my only rat snake is a female Spilotes pullatus. She is completely psychotic- when I open the cage she zooms around like a lightning bolt, drums her tail, strikes repeatedly and musks and poos everywhere. She constantly stinks like stale butt, and is hilarious to control on a hook. She was great for practicing my hooking skills- she makes my cobra seem like a piece of cake.
