I think its reasonable to spend more than 10 or 15 bucks on a temp gun. Just make sure your not paying for the sticker.

I have an engineering temp gun, got it for 26 bucks from an electronics supply place. That said I tend to check temps with my $600 DMM... gross misuse of technology yes... ashamed... maybe... do it anyways? yes

Snakes can and will move to thermoregulate a shift of 2% varriance is nothing to worry about. If it is, then there's something majorly wrong with the basic husbandry itself i.e. no thermal gradiet in the enclosure itself.

In saying that though I have a temp gun with a thermocouple attachment to cross check the IR reading as well as emmisivity calibration feature.
