Re: Praying Mantsperiment 2011. Are you in?
I keep looking at them in the morning to see if they've emerged. It's right about that time. I figure maybe another 10 days at the most. I'm guessing all the wet and cold weather has thrown them off. I've hatched them before and usually right at the beginning of June is when they come out.

Re: Praying Mantsperiment 2011. Are you in?
How did this turn out?? I finally caught one of my own. Amazing watching it hunt other insects! I've fed it a couple daddy long legs so far.
I feel really bad. I've always wondered what those foam cases attached to things were around my yard, and always crushed them thinking they were some gross spider or something.

Aww~ grats! I used to keep some of them, but they passed looong ago. I'm personally interested in the ones that imitate flowers.~

Mistersprinklles where are yooouuu??
Wondering what the gestation period is now that she's mated. Also what I need to have for her to lay them on. She gobbled up the male right after mating.

Re: Praying Mantsperiment 2011. Are you in?
I did this a few years ago.We have two kinds of praying mantis and while Id seen the egg sacs like the ones you have I couldnt figure out what this particular egg sac was.It was papery and enormous. So we threw it in a coffee can and promptly forgot about it.
I few months later I saw the can and felt bad about forgetting and opened it.Imagine my surprise when several hundred baby mantis came tumbling out all over my shirt and the floor.Freaked me out because at first I thought they were spiders. We scooped them up and let them all go where we found the egg case by our porch. We still get huge mantis every year there lay an egg case.
