right now, only one of my breeder moms bites me. I'm sure it has to do with me taking her babies from her.

For the most part, no.

I also have a mother rat that bites, and draws blood.

Re: My mouse colonies - Fancy & feeders

It's so funny, that mouse has been living in a cage full of rats for months now.

The female rat had a litter of pups, and the mouse is "helping out"

I actually caught the mouse licking and cleaning the baby rats.

If only people could get along that well.

It's so true. If mice and rats can get along, you'd think people would be able to manage it..
That's cute though, haha. At least he's earning his keep! Why is he in there, anyway? hahaha

Re: My mouse colonies - Fancy & feeders

My 10 year old son found the mouse running free in our house (common occurrence here) so he caught it and put it in the wrong cage.

They were all getting along so well, I decided to see how long it would last, that was months ago.

It's funny when the mouse gets on the exercise wheel, then a rat gets on it too, Rats have a ton more strength than the mouse does, so they often centrifuge the poor mouse. (Mousie seems to like his carnival ride)

Re: My mouse colonies - Fancy & feeders

Thanks for the tip dude, it really works!
I have six tanks up and running with my mice but i never thought it be such a tricky bussiness with the moody females munching each othes young, im still a beginner but hope to supply petshops in my town during winter months they never have stock of pinks. Im just wondering how many females you have per male? Dont you maybe have some tips for me?

Re: My mouse colonies - Fancy & feeders

I use the "harem system? one lucky stud male with 3~4 females per set up.

I also have an "isolation tank" for those over eager males that need to be taken out every once in a while.

When I catch a male raping little hopper mice, or killing pinks, They go straight to the python cage.

I have seen a male kill pinkies to get the mother back into heat faster!

Re: My mouse colonies - Fancy & feeders

I have six tanks, 75cm length x 30cm with x 37cm height, 4 tanks with 5fem and 1male, 1tank for the males and 1 for jumpers, my system seem to be stabilized now for the first time since i havnt found anything dead in the tanks for a month now. I have never noticed the males doing funny stuff just one male that bites his females after i clean the tank, i figured its nothing serious since i can never see bite marks on them. So the only way to increase the amount of babies they make is to set up more tanks?

Caught mousie caring for rat pups again.

This always makes me smile, Mousie sit on those pups more than the mother ever does.
