Re: My Rainbow Boas

my condolances mate.poor wee jaffa

have you ever used provent a mite.

its worked for me first time every time mate.you dont have to treat the snake.you treat the tank and its furnishings (not the water bowl) leave for 2 hours until the fumes clear up.then pop snake and water bowl back in and that should be it.it remains active for 30 days.it dont kill mite eggs but wipes them out as they hatch.also kills any adult mites right away.ive had a few debates about snake mite treatments on here but this product has done me proud with a 100% cure for mites record with me.
cheers shaun

Re: My Rainbow Boas

Do you use that stuff all through the summer then? I`ll look into that. I use Frontline once I spot mites. I totally empty the tank, all the furnishings get thrown out of the window, I won`t even take them through the house. The tank is then washed with soapy water, disinfected with reptile disinfectant. I Frontline each corner, each nook and cranny, treat the snake and return once danger of fumes is gone. I then keep the affected snake in sterile conditions for a week or two. That usually works ok.....

Re: My Rainbow Boas

im not sure i understand what you mean by do i use it right through the summer mate.

i use it anytime of the year if theres a mite problem.only twice have i had the miss fortune of mites in my collection.when i bring new snakes into the house i put them in a sperate room for quarintine.in that room i always have a tank thats been treated with provent a mite a few hours before the snake arrives.imo that guarentees me that even if the new snake has mites that they will be killed when the snake enters the tank (treatment remains active for 30 days).when i bring a new snake in the house as extreme as this is about to sound this is what i do.

i enter my house walk straight into my kitchen with the new snake in the pillow case ive used for transportation.my kitchens on the ground floor of my house,my quarintine room is upstairs on a different level..i then strip of every piece of clothing i have been wearing while picking the snake up and put it straight into my washing machine.i then put on a wooly hat my wife has left out for me (it stops any mite eggs falling from my hair).i then walk through the house wearing only my hat,go upstairs to my quarintine room.put snake in his new tank.i then walk back downstair with the pillow case i used to transport the new snake.i put the pillow case in a polly bag and tie it secure before i leave the quarintine room.downstairs i put it all in an outside bucket.i then go back upstairs and have a long shower.i do not go near any of my other snakes until the next day and ive had a second shower.

as said this may sound extreme but in all the years ive kept snakes i have only had a mite infestation twice.the above measures are to prevent me from moving mite eggs around my house and other snakes.

granted its not a pretty site me padding about starkers in the house wearing a wooly hat with a snake in a pillow case.but for me its been a very successfull protocall that imo has helped me keep those horrible little pests away from my collection.

just make sure you have your curtains shut so you dont get a knock at the door from the police.who have had reports of a naked man and a pillow case streaking past their windows,ha,ha
cheers shaun
