Malpolon monspessulanus. That's right!!
I thought it would be interesting to post because it's actually a common snake around my area.
Biggest i've seen was 10 or 11 feet. There are plenty of reports on bigger ones.
Matt, the head shot gave it away, right?

In english it would be something like *******-snake. that gives you an idea on what people think of this amazing reptile. They kill it whenever possible.
This snake can rise up from the ground and give you an angry stare wich lead to the popular belief that it could perform hypnotism and therefore should be killed (it surprises me that people still believe that TODAY).
Males grow larger. They get a raw, impressive look when full grown.

From the first picture I thought it was Natrix but the second shot ruled that out. I've never heard of Malpolon monspessulanus. Good quiz.
Edit: I guess the "Gets big" clue rules out my first guess.

malpolon can be confused with Natrix. But they lack the neck band and have way less spots (or none at all). And, of course, they are bigger.
edit: after watching this last pic carefully, i must say it's a copperhead.
