If your looking at matching te outside of the cage to match your house I would avoid melamine as it seems not to paint the best. Sealed plywood is always a good choice and if you get the higher end plywood it stains very nice.

if you use plywood then you would have to use a special paint for the inside as it would absorb the moisture and rot....also the pet stores around me have a 30 gallon for $211......thats not cheap so maybe the site would be better....Connor

Lioness:
you can get melamine that is different wood colours already. I'm sure there's dark ones. It's more than the white stuff, but then it's waterproof and you don't have to paint it.

Here's one I built last year. It's way bigger than you'll need for a corn. It's 4'x2'x3' high. It was originally built for a Black Rat Snake that took up residence on the back porch behind the hot tub. I never could catch it so I ended up putting 1.1 corns in it.
<IMG SRC="http://home.att.net/~dannycarwile/Vivarium2.jpg">
2 hides, one on the hot side and one on the cool side. Water on the cool side and I put an extra water container on the hot side to keep the humidity up during the winter while the heat's on. It's quite dry in my house with the heat on. Also have a rock they can get under in the middle at the back. Thermostat probe on the wall on the hot side controlling the heat light in the ceiling with an eye ball fixture. I put a fluorescent fixture in for light but you don't really need it. The infrared light puts out plent of light. I do use it when cleaning. I also put casters on the legs to make it easy to move and clean around. The front is acrylic with hinges and aluminum angle on the outside to make it more rigid to make sure the sides are tight enough to keep the snakes in. I used screen door hooks to secure it. One thing I did I wish I didn't. I hinged it at the top cus it wasn't enough room to let it drop down. I use a 6' stick to hold it open when needed.
The one I'm building now is only 2' high so I will hing it at the bottom and just let it hang when open.
As you can see the melamine has a nice finish and won't need any painting.
