Isnt plastic even harder to sanitize? I would imagine small knicks and scrapes on its surface would harbor alot of crap.. Clay can be heated to incredibly hot temperatures, iam sure that would kill everything.. Plastic on the other hand melts even if your water is a bit too hot I find they begin to warp.. I dont think thats a very clean alternative..

I would also think the second cardboard boxes got wet mold would begin to grow in a very short time...espeacially with a snakes enclosure ( I could be wrong ) For my hides, i let my animals make them.. Monitors love to dig..
