Disgruntled Smurf here.
What a fantastic opportunity to bring my smurf theory to the world. (Those who know me well enough are now groaning or shaking their heads, but they should have seen it coming).
The Smurfs are nothing more than evil comunist propaganda for children! Don't believe me? well here we go...
1: The Smurfs were first created in East Germany in the 60's, and only much later made it to western TV
2: Read Orwell's 1984 and compare...
Papa Smurf, not only looks like Big brother, (or Karl Marx for that matter), his place in smurf society is the same as the unquestioned authority figure.
All smurfs look identical even down to their clothing. The message to children is that individuality is bad.
This is re-inforced every episode when Brainy Smurf gets, and acts on his own ideas and inevitably gets into trouble and must be rescued by the rest of the Smurfs.
In 1984, the concept of double think and double speak is introduced. Essentially, by reducing vocabulary you reduce the ability for free thought and self expression. Naturally the ultimate end would be only one word to describe all thought, feeling and expression...SMURF, need I say more.
The villan Gargamel has only one goal, to catch the Smurfs and turn them into gold. In other words the evil capitalst is trying to exploit and destroy the peaceful communal society for profit.
Coincidence? I think not.
(Hey Mark and Ryan, how's that for a conspiracy theory for you.)
GD (PS. yes that was my generated name ironically enough)

Yeah, that came to me on one of those long and boring days at work, where you mind is anywhere and on anything to break the monotiny.
