Do you mean the "blacklight" bulbs that make things glow? If so those should never be used with any reptile or arachnid. If you mean the colored bulbs (like green, blue and red) then that's fine.

Saw an interesting show last night - "how it's made". they showed how fluorescent bulbs are made and work which i never knew before. They use a phospherous coating to turn uv light generated by mercury into visable light. Also the glass used blocks the uv light from getting out which makes regular fluorescent bulbs useless for our uv needing reptiles, apparently reptile bulbs (and i guess suntanning bulbs) are made out of quartz which allows the uv to pass. Which explains why they're so expensive compared to regular fluorescents as they're not mass produced in the numbers regular bulbs are.
