Hello Collide, what did you use to seal your plywood? Was it oil based or water based? I tried using a sealer that was oil based and it stunk forever! I also tried a water based one, but it didn't last very long. I'm currently building some Tortoise tables and I would love to know what you used so that I could try it.
Take care, Johnny.

Well I am a little worried about the ink thing also. And what would I use to seal the plywood thats not toxic?

How do you effectively clean a bare plywood cage bottom?!?!?

Maybe my cages don't have plywood bottoms? Maybe they are screened as well so the excess water drains out the bottom into a catch pail?
We all have different approaches to our husbandry. I do not like substrates in my cages. Papertowel gets wet. So does newspaper. When it gets wet it disintegrates and I don't want my chameleons accidently eating that. Most likely it would pass through their digestive system without a problem, but I'm going to risk it.
What works for me, doesn't necessarily make it right, or will work for you. And vice versa.

Hey Trace, you told him to take out the newspaper... you didn't suggest a replacement!!!!! He posted that he had a bare plywood bottom, but you didn't offer any advice about that either!!!! What should he do now, take apart his cage?!?!? Maybe you ought to work on your approach a little. This time I am being sarcastic, but you deserve it for trying to play knowledge war in this thread. Nice try though... Johnny.

Ok you guys, no need to have a tiff here. Please just answer my questions. I am worried about this little guy. He doesnt do this all the time. He just does it once in a while and I have now noticed that he will target only a couple of spots on the newspaper. So does this mean that he thinks he sees something that is not there?

Hey Trace, why do you offer your opinions then?!?!? If it may not be right, and may not work for others why do you present it as "knowledge"?!?!? I think that the proper word for your postings is "OPINION"... not fact or knowledge, just OPINION!!! Try to keep that straight from now on!
Johnny.

Your UV light is fine, as long as it is no more than 12 inches away. If it is farther away, you need to move it. The closer the better, since the strength of the UV diminishes over distance. By the way, some screen tops can diffuse up to 90% of the UV light output of your bulb. Just a thought.
Take care, Johnny.

Johnny... you need to just settle down ok? lol
I'm very happy to have Trace a part of this board and I've learned a TON of stuff from her, and I know many other people have too.
All she said was "I'd take the newspaper out and see if he still does it. Plain and simple. " That's plenty of information, and if it isn't, he can ask. He's a big boy. Why are you hassling her about not giving every bit of information that is humanly possible?

Do you know how to read J-Man? Go back and do that first, and then you can whine to me!

Yes ur UV light is good mine are on top of my cages and the chams can get right close to then via sticks ect... the plywood botton should be fine for now if u can take it out temperarily just seal it with polyurathane (ahhh spelling lol) make sure it's ingredients are just polyurathane. if u cant just make sure u dont get too much access water on there during waterings sometimes on the 2 cages i have i have too use a towl and just get all that extra water soaked up. My cages have yet to be sealed im working on a free onw right now and once it is done ill rotat a cham and start on the next.... watch him with that paper gone see what happens ... chams are not the brightest things on earth lol

Well from what i learned in the past was that newpaper has ink and yes i have seen a Cham miss a bug and hit the ink. I dont know if that was bad for him but as soon as he saw that happend he took the paper out of the cage.

in addition to polyurathane (in your case several coats mabey 3) and just seal the corners with silicone that should work well u can even stain the wood b4 hand (for looks) the polyurathane will seal it in. I want a tort one day wating till i can dedicate the space to one though.
BigPlaya
another solution to the bottom would be to creat a box at the bottom mabey 1'deep and line it with a drop sheet (plastic painting sheet) put rocks/pebbles on the pottom for drainage, cover with soil and plant some plants. This is my favorite method works very well for me as i love plants too and since i live in a basement apartment its the only place plants will grow down here.

Hello Collide, thanks for your advice! I have tried a few different products, but never Polyurethane. I like the silicone idea as well, you should post it in the enclosures forum. I bet that there are many people who would love to hear about it. I also used plants in one of my 6 foot tall by 3 foot by three foot Chameleon display enclosures, with the plastic sheeting stapled into a 12 inch high box for waterproofing. The only problem that I had was removing all of the waste products effectively. I ended up taking out the top 6 inches of the soil once a month and replacing it with new soil. That was the only way that I could be sure that it would truly be clean. It's a really cool looking enclosure though. Live plants and chameleons are an AWESOME match!!!!!
Thanks again Collide!
Take care, Johnny.
