cooking your pet's food can be a great idea. i have considered doing this myself, and occassionally do. but u have to make sure u have the right balance and u have to supplement.

Pedigree Lamb and rice for our dogs as it is the only thing our 9yr old Bouvier can stomach, she'll get violently ill if we switch it, so the others are stuck with what only she can eat, as they all share and the chow chow gets nasty hair loss due to allergies so the lamb and rice work great for us, The ACD on the other hand i think will eat just about anything and has a stomach of steel. The siamese cat is fed Iams and some sort of fancy VERY expensive wet food, i'll tell ya it looks better than the paty (sp?) i buy....lol

The cats get Eagle Hairball and Eagle Kitten, and the dog gets mostly Mountain Dog Food (it's a prepared BARF diet) and whatever other raw meat/bones that we can pick up on sale.

Linds, with regards to your above post, Eagle Pack Holistic Select, contrary to your information, does not contain ANY fillers. www.eaglepack.com if you're interested. I followed your link to Wellness and the food looks more like a one-a-day vitamin then a dog food. From the research that I'd done before I got my dog (chocolate lab), being a large breed dog, and prone to being both overweight and/or with joint problems, I did A LOT of research, and the two foods that I focused on from having spoken to vets and friends that happen to be top doberman breeders, were Eagle Pack and Wellness. Eagle Pack won due to the fact that they had a holistic blend in their dog food lineup. That and Willow enjoyed Eagle Pack more.

Sapphire, BOTH companies are American. Eagle Pack is based in Mishawaka, Indiana, and Wellness out of Lowell, Massachussetts.

Wellness is very expensive but in my oppinion the best commercial food available. I can't get it near me, so I feed Nutro Max. The puppy is on Pedigree Pro Plan, just because that is what the breeder was feeding her and it would be stressful to change her food at the same time as her environment. She will be switched to Nutro Max when she moves up to adult food.

If i was able to do so, I would feed Raw. It used to be called the BARF diet (Bones and Raw Food) whihc you prepare yourself. That way you know exactly what your dog is eating and there are no fillers.

Some have mentioned about allergies, my dog has an allergy to Plastic, and as such can not eat out of a plastic dish. If you have problems with allergies, try switching to a metal dish before you change their food.

I tried Iams, Science Diet and a few other choice brands but my Lab only likes the cheap stuff like Kibbles and Gravy Train. I even coated the food with a little gravy, egg or oil. He will actually lick the food instead of eat. But he's a weird dog all around.

We had to be picky with our food because of my ex-wifes Akita. They are supposed to avoid soy based foods.

Lol that reminds me of our late mutt lexx, he could pick out all the grains of seasoned rice with out taking any kibble. One time there was a mouse in his bowl (munching on the kibble) and he would quietly go up to the bowl, take a piece of kibble, go to a safe distance away from the bowl so as not to disturb the mouse and eat the kibble, then repeat.

hey i work at a pet store and my manager showed me how to read the ingredience/protien % and all that stuff...basically the 3 best foods we sell are nutrience...wellness...and 1st choice..so if u have a possible way of getting any of those they are all really good....nutrience and 1st choice use alot of meat for protien as opposed to corn...espeshally good for cats...why would a cat eat corn!?! they are mad carnivores! oh well.....i say as long as u dont give ur dog "kibbles n bits" then thats a step in the right direction...lol
