I'm not even gonna touch this one. I'd get banned from this site for life!

That's a funny article... thanks for sharing!

Personally, I think State and Church should be totally separate in practice as well as theory, but it'll never happen.

The funny thing is that people, in a society where over half of marriages end in divorce (something that was also forbidden at one time) feel so strongly about what a very small minority (less than 10% of the population is gay) want to call their relationship. If you look at the historic definintions of marriage it begins as an almost entirely financial agreement between the patriarchs of two families. Two fathers got together and decided that their kids would spend the rest of their lives together in exchange for some livestock or land. There have been many changes to what the word marriage means over the centuries. From arranged to chosen, from polygamyst to monogamous, between children to between adults, from a man posessing a woman to a mutual voluntary arraingment from strictly for a man and a woman to between any two adults. It's now changed so many times that my question is: does it mean anything at all anymore or has it lost all meaning in our society?

only problem i have with same sex marriages is this... marriage is a christian sacrament. i can see clearly how christians then feel about it. it's a direct conflict with their belief system. I can't stand how people come down on the catholic church especially... I mean, what other religion has changed itself over public pressure. do you think buddhists would? no. what about taoists? nope. how bout muslims. no. and they shouldn't have to. so why are christians asked to do so? just a thought.
as for me, I am catholic, but see no problem in the UNION of same sex couples in a legal sense, but marriage is a sacrament that I take seriously.
cheers,
MIKE

Marriage may be a sacrament to catholics, but it existed in one form or another before christianity, and it exists in different religions and outside of religion (remember, you can be married by a justice of the peace, and if i remember correctly, most religions will now view that as the same sort of bond). Just because CATHOLIC marriages are 'supposed' to be between a man and wife, doesn't give anyone the right to say what they can or can't do in a civil marriage.

I figure, if they're not doing you any harm, what the hell is the big deal? They're not hurting anyone, just trying to be happy....... just like everybody else. Let them get married and live their lives in peace - it's not like common law isn't virtually the same anyway. It's just a piece of paper, if they want one, let them get it and keep your noses in your own business.

My 2 cents
Dawn

Well as a few people said I'm saying something in hopes that this thread don't go horribly wrong.......

State needs to stay out to the bedrooms, Church needs to stay out of the bedrooms. If the churchs don't like it then the local judge should be able to do it. There, said and done, if it's that way then it's not church. But there is always a fight against it.

Me and my partner WAS seriously considering giving up our citizenship to the US. Considering how SUCKY it is here. I think about the only thing really stopping us is money. And the chance that gay marriages MIGHT be leagalized here sometime....when people hear homosexuality here, all they hear is "sex".....and thats all they think about.

Every one else has the right to be happy. Why can't we? Even Part of our constitution has that........

"The right to LIFE, LIBERTY, and the pursuit of HAPPINESS" So if they do this stupid bill (whatever it's called), it will only be contradicting itself.......
Ok hope I DON'T get banned now....

Christians have no exclusive claim on marriage. Marriage exhisted long before christianity was even thought of. You want freedom of religion, how about freedom from religion.
Don't inflict your religion on me.

Oh ya and I'm not only being hung for being gay, but wiccan to, and in THIS country........OH NO.......I MUST deal with the devil! But I DO NOT push my beliefs on others, I DO NOT think that my is the only way, and I do believe that what other people believe is real...if that makes sense.

the prevalent thoughts behind legal Gay marriage has to do with spousal benefits that any "couple" should be able to claim.

Like Wuntu, I would also be banned from this site if I got involved in anything related to this thread. But, it never ceases to amaze me how genuinely stupid people are, primarily modern Christians.

Wow I hate people.

Very, very good article though.

Frankly I don’t care if gay people get married. Will it change something in my live? I don’t think so. One other thing nobody said that the Christian marriage would change only the civil marriage (they’ll have to go to court to get married) so the religion should stay out of it. And I thing the church as bigger problems with their priest that slept with little boys than gay marriage (don’t mean to offend anybody it’s just my opinion)
Also, I respect all your opinons so, please respect mine…

Wow this is a touchy one. So i'm going to do a type and run (lol).

I don't see why they can't married in a court setting (that way church isn't involved). It doesn't affect my life in the slightest. The problem people have with it is all personal and moral.
