I used pine to build it and Lucite Tuff-Stuff, It is 100 times stronger than glass, non-yellowing and comes with a life time waranty. This piece was 80 dollars cdn but is worth it for the waranty!

What about scratching? That would be one thing I would be concerned. That price is also quite steep.
