Well put Ed. Another consideration I find many people don't take into account is the life span of reptiles and amphibians. Are they going to still want it in 10, 15, or 20 years? And if a time comes when they have to give it up will they take the steps to find a proper home for it, not just dump it on a rescue shelter or the first person that thinks it's cool.
