Re: Love my tarantulas

Do they actually eat things like pinky mice? Or is that bad for them?

Re: Love my tarantulas

I just bought my first tarantula recently. I purchased a P. Metallica spiderling. Can't wait for his/her color to come in. Your tarantulas look great thanks for sharing

Re: Love my tarantulas

I have fed my tarantula a pinkys before, i wouldn't provide it as main food personally. Octa has eaten a hopper (Was a bit of a deformed little mouse, neither of us has anything that eat hoppers) She ate it like a champ.

I've heard you can feed one pinky a year for a snack but I don't do this practice. I feed the occasional meal worm, a few crickets daily, and every now and then a small horn worm. But some people do it cause then will in the wild.

In the wild, tarantulas eat pretty much anything they can overpower, including rodents, small birds, reptiles, and in some cases even small fish. But the majority of their diet consists of invertebrate prey, so in captivity it is best to stick with mostly bugs. Other things can certainly be given as a treat, though parasites can be a concern. Nobody has found any benefit in feeding a diet inclusive of rodents as opposed to feeding solely insects, although nobody has found a detriment either. That said, insects are the cheapest feeders anyway so why deviate? My Ts get crickets, mealworms, and horn worms mostly. Roaches are a very popular staple food because they start out very small and grow to be quite large, so they can be used for Ts of all sizes, and are normally readily accepted even by picky eaters...they're illegal in Canada, but some people have found ways to get their own private colonies going...

A tarantula with deadly venom? I'd love to read a toxicity report on this species saying it can kill a human.

They have tried it on mice. It dies within 30 mins. Not very many people are willing to get bitten by a spider. But they say since the mice only live 30 mins after bitten that ur should be the same in a human. Crazy right? But I'm not willing to test this out

I don't doubt they're more toxic than most species, especially new world. That being said I would doubt that they're toxic enough to kill a human. Would it be a crap experience? Probably. But I wouldn't say they can kill. Do you have any more pics of it? Enclosure pics?
