I can care for a large snake. However, I wouldn't want to buy one, have it get sick and not be able to help it... That's not fair to the animal so I'll have to get in touch with my friend and see if he has a permit.

Re: Bypassing 8' legal limit?
If you own your own home, I don't see the risk of owning a snake over 8'. Take the snake out of town to a vet that treats snakes 8'+. My city Stockton has a size limit on all animals yet there's a ton of vets right outside of town that will treat them.

Even if it's illegal? There is still a risk, and people should put aside their selfish desires so they don't ruin the hobby even further. This gives lawmakers more reason to make our hobby stricter than it already is.

I have to Agree and Disagree, The laws are dumb and useless. Written by people who probably have no experience with the topic based on how they they feel about big scary baby-killing snakes... While if he is able to get a permit then great... But if they're refusing to issue them then I think he should go ahead with it.

Aside from Matt. and Mikoh its like the Blind leading the blind.
The quickest way to help cities issue an all-out ban is to work against the local bylaws.
Good Job. You guys are truly well informed.
especially since if you use Corey's logic you're subjecting your neighbors and their children to the risk of an illegal animal without thinking of potential consequences.
Brilliant. All of you!

Re: Bypassing 8' legal limit?
I live in Louisiana and I've never heard of a law against having large snakes. Several pet stores here sell 4 ft pythons and boas.so I wonder if there are any laws at all. I'm gonna google it...hahaha I know how much yall love google answers. ..lol

I'm not sure where the rude comment came from... At least I came to ask about permits and whatnot.... Many people just go out and buy Burms and Retics regardless (which I won't be doing)

Without the bans, there'd be a lot more owners = a lot more irresponsible owners = a lot more injuries and deaths from big snakes. It's like guns... Sure some bad people can get ahold of guns... But if ANYONE could walk into a gun store, guy a firearm, and ammunition, just imagine how much crime rates would go up...
I agree that some laws are made out of fear, but I do think that the size limits are useful. Even if it prevents me from having my dream snake, it also prevents some moron(s) from getting a 'big, cool snake', and ending up in the news, dead from giant man eating snake...

Re: Bypassing 8' legal limit?
Maybe I read this thread wrong but I thought he said he would try to get a permit. Anyways, for a 12' any animal would most likely be a house call, not a dr visit. If you are going to so it illegally, a friend who is a vet would be the way to go. Bash me all you want but I can guarantee a lot of the members here have/had illegal pets.

I don't really want to do it illegally... I don't need a Burm, I want one so I can go without if I have to do it illegally. My friend said that he took his alligator to the vet, said he didn't have his permit and they said it's fine and they couldn't report him for that. Idk why they can't, but that's cool. He has alligators, burms, retics... All sorts of illegal critters. He's actually one of the most responsible herp keepers I know, on and offline. Regardless of if he does it legally, he knows exactly what he's doing and has a crazy collection including venomoid Rattlesnakes, King Cobra(s), etc (I personally still don't trust those little F*****rs..). Still... I'm not half as educated and experienced as him, so I wouldn't want to do things illegally.

Re: Bypassing 8' legal limit?
Well laws are good in some ways it would stop stupid people from killing themselves because they got one huge snake cause its cool and gets them lots of attention in public but I dont think they should limit it to just animals I have seen plenty of parents with live human children they dont deserve or treat with any kind of respect or appreciation and theres noone making any laws stopping horrible people from havin 1,2,or 10 innocent children

I was raised that it's not illegal unless you get caught, it's something I follow but with boundaries of course. Does that mean I'm going to go out and illegally purchase large reptiles or hots? Probably not, but if I wanted to I would. I highly doubt that it would make the hobby look bad if someone was caught with a burmese python, they would either tell them to relocate the animal or take it away. I seem to really only hear about people keeping illegal animals when they hoard them, someone is killed or someone has been bitten. A responsible owner is not endangering any neighbors keeping a well contained 8'+ snake.
