I found two snakes
Hi, everyone. I'm new here and was directed here from another forum I posted on looking for some information regarding two snakes I found under our outside dog's 5 gallon water bucket. They aren't native and I was told they are some sort of boa, or redtail on the other forum. I have them both set up in separate 34qt sterilite bins with 5 holes on each long side, half of the bin is sitting on 12" wide heat tape hooked up to a thermostat keeping it 95 under the paper towels and 88 above. I have a water dish more than large enough for each snake to get inside of and move around in on the cold side (which is around 75-78F) and a paper towel roll in each bin on the hot side for them to hide in until I get their hides ordered. I have a board with my husbands weight vest keeping the middle of the lid secure until I can get some locks. I'm going to be ordering the small hides from ReptileBasics, but what size food should I feed them? They are about the size of a jumbo sharpie around. Am I doing anything wrong? I set all this up really fast based on my small amount of knowledge I have on snakes. I was told I can wait until Wednesday to feed them as well, is that okay?

Re: I found two snakes
Bump. I'm guessing by the size you said, probably adult mice. You can wait. they should be fed every 2 weeks. ASAP I would get them in separate enclosures. Temps seem right to me, but I don't know much. Hopefully someone else give input. Look online at care sheets, my guess is that they are Columbian redtails, or common BCI. Do some research and good luck (pictures of the snakes and enclosure would help as well)

Re: I found two snakes
sounds like a reasonable setup to get started with, although it really depends what they are, before anyone can offer firm advice, got pics?
Probably no rush to feed them unless they are malnourished, most snakes will go a long time without food without any problems

Re: I found two snakes
You're lucky to have found those little beauties, and they're lucky, too! I would lower the hot side, though. 95F seems a bit high...unless they're sick? Cool side is 75-80F with an ambient of 80-85F and a 90F hot spot. If the hot spot is too hot, they may not use it. You can feed anything that is about the size of its widest girth. Or, if you have a way to weigh the little ones, you can feed them 10-15% of their body weight.

Too right! I wonder if it is true about the lies and changing usernames etc?
I would suggest before anyone else posts here they read the whole of the linked thread!

Re: I found two snakes
Well, I guess I was right about them being sick. I couldn't think of any other reason someone would have their hot spot so high. I just didn't catch it because I've heard of people just finding exotic reptiles outside, even during the winter. I'm not sure why they felt it was necessary to go through all of this, but everyone seems welcome and willing to help, so I hope OP sticks around.

An IP check will confirm if the user has two accounts. As for the snakes I hope they get the help it seems they (well at least one of them) need and that people don't rip into her unnecessarily and just offer the advice she needs (everybody makes mistakes after all).

Re: I found two snakes
Coming to a new place you would think they could start with a clean sheet and tell the truth tho.......... (assuming that finding them is in fact a lie)
Starting anywhere with a lie doesnt encourage much faith.....
