Re: mites.

Within minutes they committed mass suicide and all drowned. Lol btw I just put new substrate it, I check the substrate/clean the water bowl daily. So they aren't in there because I need to clean more often.. that's for sure. They were probably attracted to the heat lamp or something.

that has to be it. I am still curious as to why they decided to go take a bath in my snakes water bowl.

As AaronS said, they are attracted to something they need for survival, whether it be moisture, food, or a site to lay eggs. They are not attracted to the heat lamp.
Fruitflys often will commit 'suicide' and drown themselves in dishes of water... Leave a shallow pan out in your kitchen over the course of a day and you will see. I'm not sure why they do it, but they do.
overall, they arent causing an issue, you may just have them in your house and they made their way into your snake cage as they were looking for standing water.

since you just got this corn snake, its entirely possible that it COULD have had mites, if it is kept on newspaper or papertowel temporarily you will have a better idea of any unwanted passengers.

That's actually incorrect. Most flying insects are attracted to light and heat not just moisture and food.

fruit flys are not attracted to light and heat. night flying insects use light (the moon) to find mates. most diurnal insects use pheromones and visual cues (or stake out a good place for mates like a banana peel) to find mates.
Most insects are DETERRED by heat, as due to their small size they desiccate very quickly. this is why insect traps such as the berlese funnel actually utilize this aversion to light and heat in order to drive the insects into a waiting jar of alcohol for preservation.

SOME insects may use light and/or heat as a means to find mates or food (mosquitos and blood meals), but fruit flys are NOT one of them.

Re: mites.

starbuck knows her bugs. My guess on the suicide is they search for water, then drown by accident..

Re: mites.

I don't mind them, but I just wanted to make sure it's not something I did to cause them. Since we're on the subject of mites and other nasty bugs... I am going to earn up some cash and take Yeti to the vet. My mom is NOT happy about having reptiles all over the house. lol So I am going to get Yeti a check up and finish my snake rack.

Your pitbulls most likely make more of a mess and have more of a smell. Tell mom that.
